Did your 5 Wood surprise you in the same fashion....what I mean is it that much easier to hit than other 5 Woods you've owned? 265yrds....good grief...you are hurting that poor ball.

I don't own a 3 wood, so that 5 wood has to kind of "double" as two different clubs..... and she does a great job of doing that.....

and to answer your question, yes, that 5 wood did and still does surprise me..... I got the two hybrids before the 5 wood, like maybe a week before.... and knowing that those hybrids are awesome, and the 5 wood being pretty similar in every way to those hybrids, I figured that it will be just fine for me.... and I was right.... I actually probably hit the 5 wood more often than either of my hybrids.... not sure why, I just find myself sitting 220 or better from the hole a lot..... But, thats mostly because the courses that I frequent during the year just require me to use it quite a lot.... either long par 5's or real short par 4's, or dog legs, etc.....

265 yard 5 wood??? geeeez

with a little help from the wind.....

but, honestly, if the wind is at my back a bit (no more than 10 MPH needed), 265 is definitely not out of range of my 5 wood..... My home course has a 258 yard Par 4 on it (yes, it is the easiest hole on the course) and I've over shot the green by a few yards more than once w/ it.....

yeah, after i posted that, i thought about it and i hit my 5 wood 225-230ish and i am by no means a long ball hitter, so im sure someone who can crank the ball can hit their 5 wood 265 no problem.... at first it just sounded like a crazy length

265 aint nothing. I play (fairly regularily now) with an LDA guy who drives Hole number 9, (right around 300.) with his 5 wood. When he plays my course, he doesnt even carry a driver.. cuz he drives all the par 4's with 3 wood :/

Regardless, good to hear dub..let us know how the other hybrids go!

I was in a golf store today after my round...needed to get some balls and one of those handy ball templates. I've been trying to get my putts started on the right line and a long distinct line seems to help...plus it doubles as my "mark".

Anyway....I looked at some of the Sumo2 and Dymo2 4 and 5 woods. They really do set up very close to how the Sumo2 hybrid does....looks like and extension of the set.

The 3 wood, however.....set up like a different beast...reminiscent of a fairway driver.

One of the guys I play with sometimes kills his 5 wood as well. He's only been playing a couple of years....mid 30's....played college linebacker.....very athletic. I'd say his 5 wood and my driver are about matched up well off the tee. We've checked some of his drives carefully using the cart gps.....unreal distances....it simply scares me to say how far. Oddly enough, he's a big NIKE fan, too. I think it's part of the "Tiger" craze as he, like myself, is a huge Tiger fan.

I want to game this 4 H for a few more rounds and then most likely order a 3 H and go from there.

yeah.....

I've just always liked Nike stuff since I can remember.... and when I really got into golf, I stuck w/ it..... their equipment has come a long way in even the past couple of years to the point where it's a serious contender and/or better to anything any other company makes....... but, get that 3 H..... or 5 wood......

yeah.....

The 3 hybrid was ordered today....7-10 days it should be in my bag. Went with the same specs as my 4H....+1" stiff graphite. I'll have to regrip it to the midsize Tour Velvet when it comes in.

The 4 hybrid is still gaming nicely. I tried to stretch it out a tad too far today on a few shots...too big of a gap in the bag. The 3 will fall in perfectly. It did solid work on a 185 yard par 3.....missed birdie and sunk par. These square things can be worked as well. Draws are no problem.

awesome to hear....

got the same hybrids that I'm gaming.... and like I've said, I love 'em.... I have pretty much a full season under mine to give you my thoughts on them, and I'm glad to be of some assistance.... it is kind of crazy though that between a 3 H and a 4 H how much distance those two clubs alone will cover for you..... and bridge that gap to your woods that much better for you...... cause I'm using the 3 H and 4 H pretty much equally between the two.... .

Dub,
What club are you dropping when you carry the new hybrid?

I've been a bit dissatisfied with my hybrid lately and spent some time this past weekend looking for Sumo^2 3 hybrid. Bonaventure has a 2 (17*) and a 4 (23*) on the used racks, but I really want to stick with something giving me around 20* of loft. Dicks has a wide selection on hand and I have a $20 off coupon, but retail is $150 ($130 w/coupon), that's a bit more than I would like to spend. I'd really like to pick this up used and save myself a few bucks. I've been watching ebay but so ar no luck...

Dub,

I've seen a number of the square ones new on Ebay for fairly low. I just checked...there are a number of them...new for $75-109 right now....seem to have both head types, rounded and squared.

Boneventure is great, isn't it?!! They have a huge turnaround on the used clubs...I'll bet they'll have one soon. I just ordered the 3 hybrid. I'm hoping that it'll fill the 205-190 yd gap. I'll have to clean up my sig line to show the new bag configuration when I decide what direction I'm heading in. For now the 7 wood and 3 iron are history. I haven't really missed either. I may cringe a bit if it comes down to giving up the 4 iron....but I'll adapt.

I considered for a long time buying a 7w. My irons didn't come with a 3i, so I had a big gap between my 4i and the 5w. I ended up dropping the 5w, adding the 3h and a LW. The 3w and 5w were basically doing double duty. The choice for me came down to a 7w or a 3h. I went with the hybrid for versitility and I'm happy with this set up but I never was totally comfortable with my hybrid. Sometimes I wondered if it's closed face and draw characteristics were causing me problems. So that's where I'm hoping the Sumo 3h will help. I bought one yesterday online from the above recomendation (3ballsgolf), so I should have it next week.

What happened between you and your 7w?

Dub how goes it with the hybrids?

I've decided to start looking for a Sumo2 4&5 hybrid to replace my 4i an 5i. My Sumo2 3h is one of my favorite clubs to hit and while I'm pretty consistant with my 4i and 5i it's nothing like the utility and consistancy I get out of the 3h. I've been hawking ebay for the last couple of weeks with no luck and Bonaventure (a local golf shop) hasn't had anything that fit my needs either (stiff flex shaft). I'm keeping my eyes open and feel it's only a matter of time before I find what I'm looking for at a price I can live with. I can't wait till I get them in my bag though. I'll be deadly from 175yds and out and that's a pretty nice feeling.

Played nine holes this morning and

I just purchased my first hybrid this afternoon (4H) and I feel the same. I am getting even 5H with a 3º difference (in Cleveland hi-bores) because I feel it is well worth it!

Dub how goes it with the hybrids?

Hybrids are still going well, Chief. We played over at Bartram Trail this morning....teed off just prior to 11:00am. The weather cooperated nicely....humid beyond what I was ready for.....but nice. Good wind up all day to factor into virtually every shot.

We played the blue tees and I wound up using 4H on two of the par 3s. Pars on both holes.....I assure you that I was happy to make pars today....couldn't putt worth anything. Had to stiff 'em tight if I wanted hope for anything else. One thing I didn't have all day was a fairway bunker shot. I was able to carry or otherwise avoid them. These 3H and 4H sticks will have you flinting with fairway bunkers on your tee shots due to how smoothly you can extract yourself with the hybrids. Funny thing is that as good as the 3H and 4H were....my 5 iron was horrible. Two hooks that cost me two balls. For a minute....I had to point out to Mr. 5 iron that I have no allegiance to any club save my hybrids. Had someone walked up and offered me a free trade....fitted 5H for fitted 5 iron....I'd have jumped to the offer. It was a fluke, though....the 5 iron will come back.................I hope. I've got a gap in my bag that I've been waiting to fill. It was either gonna be 2H or some highly lofted wedge. The last few rounds I've played have made the decision clear....it's gonna be the wedge. Reason being that I can hit the 3H really nicely and can grip down on 3W for a decent but not overly large gap. I'm not able to consitently open the face up on my SW and get the full shot / short yardage results I want. It is such a nice feeling....knowing that you have money clubs from 180-205 ( as long as I don't make a completely ridiculous pass at the ball). I was warned off on the square ones....."You can't work them, etc". Bull ....cuts and draws are easy to pull off. I've been working on trying different trajectories with them....that has been rewarding, too. The big thing that I had to constantly remind myself of is to set up close enough to the ball with them. The wood-like head had me stretching too far the first round or two I played them. I really like the irons I added last month.....the three wood even more.....the driver even more still......but....I'd fight a gang of Somalian pirates for these two hybrids.

Nice, glad to hear about your good luck.

Right now I'm hitting a Nickent 3dx hybrid and love it. I can't imagine how much I'd like the 5dx.

Can someone shed some light if the 5dx is much better than the 3dx?

Nice, glad to hear about your good luck.

the 5DX is light years ahead of the 3DX. granted, the 3DX is a good hybrid, but the 5DX is the LONGEST, STRAIGHTEST, MOST FORGIVING hybrid i have EVER hit by far. that thing is almost like cheating, its ridiculous.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
