I would not buy a Driver based on sound over actual performance, but luckily with the MacGregor MT driver I recently purchased I am getting great performance and sound. I don't know if anyone has hit these but they are the closest driver I've hit in a long time that sounds and feels like the old persimmon drivers. Just a nice solid "SMASH" without the ting-y-ness of most modern drivers.

I would have to say nothing bothers me. I played an off brand that had the most annoying ping to it but I got used to it. I just bought a HiBore XLS and that first hit scared me. but after I saw how well it worked for me that was the last time I ever thought about sound. I bought that drive after one bucket of balls on the demo. Sounds should be put over playability IMO

I played the Sumo 2 last year, and man was it loud!

I didn't really mind it, like some have said, it's an attention getter.... and I can be an attention wh*re sometimes.....

But, I went w/ the Cobra L5V for this year and she does have that high pitched "pop" to her, but when I'm watching it sail 300 yards, I'm not going to worry about the sound.....

The sound really doesnt matter to me. As long as the driver performs well, Im happy. My MX-560 is what some would consider to have a weird sound (its got a pretty loud, "tink" at impact), but it performs well and I like it.

The L5V is the loudest thing I have heard in a while. It's more than a pop; it sounds like a bomb went off.

I couldn't stand the sound of the composite drivers, like the Callaway and Cobra. The sound was one of the reasons I went with the Taylormade when I bought a new driver last year. The Taylormade just looked right, sounded right but most important, I hit it the best.

I have a Callaway FT-i Tour Low CG Driver, it sounds like a baseball batt hiting a rock, the sounds is super loud and annoying, but the results are well worth noise..

As you can see... I play the same club. It is certainly loud, but I actually like the sound... it is much better than the muted "TINK" my old driver made. My friend says it sounds like an oil can, but I think that is more descriptive of the SUMO square driver. The loudness of my FT-i makes me feel like I'm bombing it.

I bought the Cobra LD F Speed Driver because it provided the best results. So what if it sounds like a tin can when I hit it right? At least I know by sound that I DID hit it right. :)

I LOVE the sound of my driver, especially when it sails into the wide blue yonder! It brings to mind a college baseball game.

If I could get a putter that makes that kinda noise I'd be on it in a second.

I don't know who this kid is, but the impact sound sure is familiar

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
