If my friend has a long putt and misses, if it's within 6 feet he'll finish out one handed right away as if it's a gimme, if he makes it (he usually does) his hole is over, if he misses it, he gives himself the putt. Meanwhile, I'm sweating over the 3 foot down-hiller that I have coming up. He'll say I give you that, I say no thanks I am doing myself a grave disservice by not playing the putt. I miss and he has a better score on the hole than me. We aren't playing a match so he doesn't care.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

Not really a peeve, but my brother-in-law hasn't bought a golf ball in 20 years. He is the ultimate ball hawker, I think sometimes he goes out just to look for balls and not really play a round. Of course with all of the variety of balls he never knows what ball he is playing, if he hits one in the rough, any ball he finds could be his, 'cause he is pretty sure he had one of those in his bag!!!!

There are some courses I won't play with him as his head might burst seeing all those balls sitting in the creek.

I too have a friend that is an extreme ball hawker. He has one of those contraptions that let him reach to the center of the lake to fish balls out. That, and he still wears jean shorts, and wears them to play in. I'm not so sure jean shorts were ever "in", but if they were, that fad died back in 1987 or so.

I don't include him anymore.

I have a friend that plays in old golf shirts that are too small and look as if he took them out of the washer and put them under his mattress to dry.

I am not a fashionista, but come on! At least look like you care. He doesn't play that often, so he could afford 1 shirt to be designated as "golf shirt".

A took a lesson the other day and it changed my swing. I was hitting the ball really good and then I hit one bad shot and my dad goes "You're going back to your old swing!" I'm fourteen so I can't be rude or I'll get in trouble but I try and tell him it was one shot. He acts like I'm a scratch golfer.

To solve this problem/peeve all you have to do is keep the score. Write down your partner's correct score not giving him those gimmies. This may not solve everything, but it'll give you a much more accurate picture of your games. If he objects with what you write down tell him that you keep the score correctly and if he isn't happy about that then he simply shouldn't bother keeping score at all.

My regular buddies really aren't too bad. One guy has a habit of spitting (he's a smoker). It's not excessive or anything but he does it occassionally without thinking. If I've got to spit I make it a point to step into the woods or away from everyone else. I've never been a spitter though so maybe it stands out to me more than most?

Another guy I play with occassionally is a bit of a golf snob. He only likes to play at nice courses, and if we're playing somewhere that doesn't come up to his expectations he'll complain about it throughout the round. Not excessively, but after you've said something to that effect 2 or 3 times we all get it that you aren't happy with the course and to go on about it more becomes annoying. What is also annoying about this fellow is that if we go out to a course he does like and there is something wrong (say they have recently airated the greens) he has no problem in letting it slide without comment. It's obvious that if a course meets his standards he's happy regardless but if it doesn't he's always got to find something to nit pick and be upset about. I'm a golfer on a budget and $50 or more rounds are not something I indulge in on a regular basis. As a consequence of this I can't maintain high standards for course quality, but it's a compromise I'm willing to make so that I can play on a regular basis.

I have a couple of ball hawking friends in our loose association of golfers. Up here woods really means inpenetrable thicket, yet these fools will crash through the "jungle", making all kinds of noise for a few balls. Makes no sense to me.

I have a friend who tries to always drive the cart to within inches of his ball. Course rules don't matter to him because he thinks his chronic pulmonary disorder gives him a free pass. He insists on driving, as well. It is just not fun for me anymore.

Great post. Funniest I have read. I feel for you. I will say though that as a dad that has attempted to teach his son the golf swing, it is very difficult.

Another guy I use to play with, thinks the economy is stuck in 1981, he won't pay more then $19 to play a round of golf. Once in a great while he'll splurge for a $30 round, but never for a $50 round. Needless to say, he plays very few rounds of golf.

I only have one constant playing partner and he's my best friend and he is just terrible, but nothing he does bothers me.

He's 6-8 and uses clubs made for someone around 6-1...but he has a snowman or worse every hole, but we go play rinky dink courses when we play together...par 3 courses or little 9 hole courses that play about 2500 yards, stuff like that. And we have a blast together actually.

We actually bring my iPhone onto the course and record our crazy antics and just go out and have fun...like having match play and he hits normal while I'll have to play left handed with my right handed clubs and see who wins.

We just make fun out of it, no seriousness involved. I don't let it bother me the things he does, and he doesn't let it bother him that I'm actually superior to him in something sports related...we both play basketball together, and at 6-8 he clearly has the advantage over me at 6-1 LOL

My wife just told me to be quiet.

sigh, I get so dissapointed when the cart girl isn't even close to at least being cute. It really puts a damper on my mood for the round

Being a college freshman, the cute blonde that's the same age as me makes the round just THAT more enjoyable.

I too hate it when the beer cart girl isn't cute at all, or is elderly. WTF?

If I ran the course, my beer cart girls would be hot AND as topless as the law would allow.

My local course has the ugliest cart girl I have ever seen. She is in her 40s and was probably cute at one time. Not anymore. And, since she isn't, I have no desire to buy anything from her.

One day, while playing with this single I never played with before, he and the cart girl get something going. He calls her over and grinds on her in the middle of the fairway. Not a pretty sight. A 45 year old dude grinding on an ugly 40 year old woman. Threw my game off for the rest of the day.

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
