I'm not sure the exact name of it, but the little black collars above my club heads have slid up the shafts slightly. Not every single club but the more heavily used irons.

What causes this? There's nothing loose, and the clubs feel fine. The reason I'm asking is I'm selling this set to a friend and don't know why this happened. Is it bad?

Thanks

I'm not sure if ferrules are held in place with glue/epoxy or just with pressure. But I would think you could push them back down with a little bit of epoxy and the clubs would be fine. I'm sure some of the club builders here can tell you for sure.

ferrule's are cosmetic. They are held in with epoxy, the epoxy has probably failed, you can just slide it back down with a dash of epoxy and you will be fine.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

If the ferule is sliding it may be cracked. Often a little acetone will melt it back together, fingernail polish remover contains acetone and will work in a pinch.

I had this happen to a club that was part of a set built by Golf Galaxy. What turned out to happen was that the club head had slid down the shaft relative to the ferrule, rather than vice versa. The club head is held in with epoxy and I believe the ferrules are as well, so it could be either one moving. The guy who fixed it said he thought he could tell somehow by looking at the grip that it was the club head that moved, maybe because it was misaligned to the head and indicated twisting, but I don't know. I would think it much more likely for the ferrules to be moving, which as clearwaterms said are really only cosmetic.

    • Ah.. my regular weekend league. Lol Scrambles are fine. Usually there's charity involved. So there's that. There are much worse events Im forced to attend twice a year.
    • Does Justin Thomas have a massively underrated short game? It seems every time I look up he's hitting it close from a tough lie after short siding himself. What masterful touch
    • I freaking hate them. Too expensive, cheaters, food sucks, too dependent on weather, I keep telling myself never do it again but I'm a dummy
    • I enjoyed the A-B-C-D scramble we did at Kittyhawk before it shut down. Yes. The point was to meet the other members and get the season kicked off. Nobody took it too seriously. At least with that group, cheating wasn't a big issue.  As the D part of A-B-C-D, I enjoyed getting to play with one of the Association's top players. One year I played with the city champ. Man could he hit a ball.  It probably isn't something I'd want to do more than once a year, but it has its place.
