installing a grip(newbie)

Anything I need to know when installing a grip? I've got a kit that I bought at Austad's and a grip also.

The kit has some alcohol type stuff to clean off the old goop I assume, new grip adhesive as well. I assume the shaft should be warmed to room temperature before installing the grip?

the liquid is solvent. it's simple. remove the old grip, remove the old tape. put on new tape. pour the solvent all over (thoroughly) the new tape, slide the new grip on. If your shaft is steel, removing the old grip is easy, just cut it and peel it. If it's graphite - be careful not to scrape the shaft - it will cause it to split in time...

I would take the time to look at the numerous video tutorials online. It's not that hard. Many times the hardest part is simply getting the old grip off (and not hurting your graphite shafts). I think the hardest thing is making sure it's on straight. That may not sound like a big deal but it sure is when doing your putter.

I think I'm going to have to regrip my wifes "new clubs" we got them used on ebay and the grips are a little slippery.

Just gotta find out what grips are best for her.

I have tried the method using an air compressor and it's almost ridiculously easy. All you need is an air compressor with a thin nossle and some form of plastic pipe to prevent the grip from exploding. Once you have tried it once or twice it's something that can be done in a matter of seconds, without using any solvents, tape or knife. If you want, you can remove the old and add some new tape to the shaft once you've got the grip off.

I think the hardest part of installing your first ever grip is just doing it.

Once you see how simple it really is, you'll wonder why you ever paid someone to do it for you.

Take your time, use lots of solvent for your first install, keep everything square and you'll be fine. Remember, the worst thing that can happen is that you'll ruin a good grip and have to start all over.

Get a hooked utility blade to cut off the old grip - way easier, doesn't scrape shafts, harder to cut yourself.

I find that on graphite getting the old tape off is easier if you heat it with a hairdryer or something. After that I take them outside and clean them off with just a bit of lighter fluid (removes old glue) and then rubbing alcohol (to make sure there's no lighter fluid left and the tape will stick).

I grip them inside on a vise (toe up) with the Brampton's stuff and the 2" wide tape (one strip right down the shaft, it's great) cut to 11" with roughly 1/2-3/4" sticking off the butt end to twist and fold into the shaft. USE PLENTY OF ACTIVATOR - put more on the butt end than you think you need as this will get pushed over by the entire grip and the grip will push the goop forward as you slide it on.

If you're using grips where alignment matters (New Decade Multi-compound and the like) I'd also check the grip position from address. setting it on the vise with the toe pointing up gets it close, but I like to make sure the grip is in line with the shaft when the club is in the address position - the NDMC grips have three white dashes you use to line up the grip.
