Up to this point I have been using just the cheapest ball I can find as I have been learning the game and have been loosing a lot of them. I am starting to get somewhat a handle on things and my swing is starting to improve and I am keeping them more inbounds. I would like to try a better qaulity ball with out getting overly expensive. I still am batteling a slice at times so what is a next step up golf ball that would help with that and help me continue to improve my game. I have been thinking of trying the Top Flight XL "Straight" are these worth trying?

Thanks!

Mark

I have read that the top-flite gamer is a pretty versitlie ball for its price ($20 dozen) good distance, and reasonble spin!

I found that the Bridgestone e6+ is pretty good at reducing side spin and making the ball track better when slicing, but no ball will eliminate it. I tried the Toprock Straights a few years ago and they where absolutely no help in getting the ball straight.

I would also recommend the Wilson Staff 50 or the Zip as inexpensive quality balls to try.

If you are slicing the ball, I would go with a lower spin ball. The Gamer is a higher spin ball, as is the Bridgestone e5+ and the Wilson Zip.

I would recommend a good compromise ball like the Noodle +, or maybe the Titleist DT line.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

Just to clarify, the Zip is a low compression ball (actually a zero compression core, hence the name Zip) which is what helps in reducing a slice. The spin comes from the softer cover. When I played them I had spin around the greens due to the soft cover and a lot less side spin off the driver due to the low compression core. My normal slices where more of a fade.

The e5+ is designed for spin but the e6+ is designed to fly longer and straighter. The best thing is to do what I did this year, find the part of your swing that is causing the slice. Brian Manzella's site was a big help for me to the point I took the right side of the golf course out of play. My main fault was a cupped left wrist at impact which left my club face wide open.

Obviously it would be best to try to work out the slice, but in the meantime the Bridgestone e6 is pretty amazing at how much it helps.

Everyone needs to take a peek at the golf digest 2009 ball chart. It gives a chart of driver spin and launch angle, and wedge spin and launch angle. It seems to be the best way to decide what ball you want.

Big bertha diablo has the highest launch angle and the least driver spin. That would probably be ideal. I would suggest more but i seem to have misplaced my golf digest magazine and cant find the chart online...

Also i believe it was the nike one vapor that claims it reduces side spin on the driver and golf digest said "there may be some truth to it".

I just ordered some shirts from TGW and added a two ball sleeve of the Nike Vapors for $3.49 at the checkpout. I am looking forward to trying them.

Id recommend the Top-Flite D2 Straight and the Bridgestone E6+. Both are designed to reduce sidespin for straighter shots and are relatively inexpensive.
The Top-Flite D2 costs $15 for a box of 15 and the Bridgestone E6+ costs about $25 a dozen.

Thanks for the info everyone. I know that the golf ball is not going to "fix" my slice and I need to work on my swing for that. I just feel it is time to move up from a very cheap ball to something a little better. I will give some of the ones mentioned a try starting with the Bridgestone e6.

A while back I bought a couple dozen Bridgestone E6+ when they had that free golf towel promotion going on and today I put them in play for the first time.
I was hitting some of the straightest shots I have EVER hit. All in all, I was impressed with the E6+.

How was the spin with those? Were you able to stick iron shots and control green side pitches? Sorry for all the questions but I was looking pretty hard into buying a dozen of them.

    • Day 167 - 2025-03-16 Hit balls after a long day. Junior Elite and a few lessons. Meh.
    • It kinda is… and Tiger isn't super young anymore. You're missing the fact that Tiger changed the game. Golfers put far more strain and stress on their bodies now than they did fifty freaking years ago. The sport is different now. It's faster, and you have to be significantly better now to even make it to the PGA Tour let alone stay there than you did in Jack's day.
    • Well, at least it got fixed & you’ll be back nonetheless.
    • Day 5 March 16th, 2025 Went to the range for about an hour. Worked on backswing and downswing piece. Finally got to making shorter backswings. Feeling like the swing stops when hips get to hip height. That is more of a feeling for how much the hands move, the hands get closer to A3-A3.5.
    • Seems like Jack was pretty "old" when he won his last Masters. And Gary Player is still playing, despite being a fitness freak all his life. Years ago, Cary Middlecoff stated that Tiger was going to have back problems after he reached the age of 30, due to the body torque he used in his swing. But Tiger has also had plenty of issues with the rest of his body. And the car crash certainly didn't help. Has any golfer been as "injury prone" as Tiger?
