What has the overall preference been for these putters? I have a 33 inch putter and have no thoughts of switching, but have had ideas of building one to try out and see how it could impact my game.

Any thoughts would be helpful. thanks

JMHO...nothing says I've completely given up on the putting stroke like a belly putter. I will however give a pass to guys with back problems. It's mainly an issue when it comes to practicing (more than gaming) putting. I thankfully don't have back problems, but after an hour on the practice green, even my back feels a little tweeked.

BTW, my playing group once came upon a baby copperhead snake on a green. Those things are very, very aggresive. I was very grateful one of the guys was using a longer than belly putter! He gave that thing a scoop and throw, something I wouldn't try with my 33" Ping.

i tried one out at a golf retailer and can't see any reasons to use one. for my sake at least. having the end of the grip rest on your belly just feels too wierd.

belly putters should be ILLEGAL! lol

yes...

Cheating.

yes...

cant stand to look at them

and YES!

I think it's fine. Helps out your back if you're having back problems.

you're thinking of broom putters or chest anchored putters (not sure what the official name is). Belly putters still require you to bend over, they just anchor the end of the shaft forcing the release.

I think they look cool. I'm going to buy a 43 inch putter shaft from golfsmith and get a ping grip to put on it. It will only cost around $20 to convert my ben hogan hawk putter into a belly putter. I don't currently game it, but I think it would be a better use for it than to sit around. I just want to try it to see how it is, theres no way I would switch to it from my scotty though.

If they were really cheating to the point of giving an unfair advantage then everyone on tour would be using them. I hardly ever see them around but I don't have a problem with them. If you like it and it works for you then go ahead and use one.

Helps me putt better, I don't see anything wrong with that. If belly putters were that much of a menace to society I'm sure the USGA would outlaw them. Stacey_E I had completely given up on my putting stroke. Also I always walk and have never had a problem with it sticking out of my bag.

BTW, if I don't loose some more of this winter weight, my 33" putter will be a belly putter!

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
