been wondering the same thing myself....played at a sweet local course yesterday, The River Golf Club.

They use a Laser Link system that you rent (which I did) you simply point it at the vicinity of the flag and it shoots an exact yardage. There is some type of prism on the top of the flagstick that it locks on. It was an absolute delight.

I'm gonna have to add a quality rangefinder....one that has the "pin-seeking" mode to provide simular resutls to the thing I used yesterday.

I was thinking Leupold or Bushnell, and ended up with the Bushnell more because the Leupold are tough to get in Canada, and I had tried some other guys Bushnell and new what to expect. I have been very happy with my Bushnell, but have heard great things about the Leupold, I just haven't been able to try one myself.

What Bushnell are you referring to? I have Bushnell Medalist with the Pinseeker. For golf purposes, I'll put it up against any rangefinder on the market. There's never an "almost always" reading, I ALWAYS, without fail, get the right number. Look, I'm sure Leupolds' are fine units, but they're not the second coming! Bushnell's been in the game for a while too. My first Bushnell lasted for years, I bought it at Walmart it was $199 in the hunting department. No Pinseeker feature, after 4-5 years of golf bag abuse, I sold it to my friend for archery hunting. He is still using it 5 years later. I then "upgraded" to 400 series Bushnell. Again I paid around $200, used it for 3-4 years, golf bag abuse, yada, yada,... Sold it through these very forums to a guy who apparently loves it still. Now I have my Medalist with Pinseeker. Love it. Field tested by me. Always get the reading almost instantly. Durable as hell and uses 9 volt batteries you can buy at the gas station on the way to the course. Speaking of batteries, I'll betcha I've used less than 7 batteries in all 10 years of using these Bushnells. The battery run time is nothing short of amazing. When the low battery warning starts flashing you still have 3 or 4 rounds left before final exhaustion. As always, YMMV.

I still have my 400 which has been fixed once by Bushnell free of charge even though it was way out of warranty. The pieces on the flag stick that you talk about at least at Bethpage were given to the course by bushnell so the laser would pick it up in a flash. As far as I have seen the Red and Black courses both have them and they work like charms. The unit I have as I said is an older one without Pinseeker but with the reflectop on the top of the stick it does not matter.

Is the slope option worth the extra coin?

    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
    • IMO-the only thing entertaining was the relay race. Everything else was excruciatingly boring...or just  stupid, like the 14-club thing. Watching guys blade wedges into the water over and over is not at all interesting.
