Tons of new techniques and new technologies appear every day. New hardware, gadgets, and gizmos. Frogger's club brush and 4 piece golf balls. Stack and tilt.

Its all a facade. ON the course you need one thing. An understanding of how the club meets the ball, and confidence to deliver that meeting the same way every time.

At risk of sounding long winded, ill get down to the purpose. The grip is where 90 percent of all bad shots arise from.

Get a solid nuetral grip. Make sure your front arm is exactly lined up with the club to your hands. Make sure your hip, not your knees, is where your vertical adjustments are coming from. Picture the shot in your head. See it the way it will fly, the way it will roll. See it in your mind before you ever take a stroke.

Dont go for the hero shots. There is always one best shot. Let it find you and make it 100 percent of the time. Shooting par all day is better than getting a couple birdies and ending up +18 due to the miracle shots you failed epicly at.

Rangefinders are evil. Just choose the first club that you grab and stick with it.

Thats all for today.

I go for hero shots, but I don't expect to play to par all the time either. In a tournament I'll probably play safe, but I always want to challenge myself. When I make it, I know I can do it the next time.

I don't use rangefinders, I use the course guide and markings on the course. With some sticks and distance marks I can pick the right club most of the time. Find your distances with the clubs, when you play, find the distance and use the club you hit that distance with.

Different equipment can make a huge difference on your game. Why settle for something you don't like and don't suit your swing if you've got the oportunity to use something better? You say 90 percent of bad shots arise from the grip, I say golf is 90% mentality. Confidence and knowing what you do is the key to good scoring.

Better yet, knowing your swing, knowing your misses, how and why you miss is what in the end will make you a better player. You may change a detail, get lucky and improve, but if you don't know what you changed or why, you will most likely fall into bad habits when the mind plays tricks with your head.

The difference is he's a +4 and you're a 20.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
