The wife has a Cobra 380, we both have CWP, and carry daily.

I also have an old Winchester 3030 lever action that my grandpa left me.

Hmm, you and your wife both carry a weapon?  Do you wash your white-tee's and cut your mullets regularly?

Inappropriate. You're really revealing more about your own personality than anything else when you say things like that.

No mullets here, no reason to assume anything about me or my wife.  My wife is a Staff Sergeant in the US Army.  Probably didn't see that coming, did you?

My screenname should be a hint. I'm over 3 dozen between 2 safes.  Mostly long guns, a lot of turn of the century Mausers, Swiss straight bolts, SKS's, several home built AR's, two hand built 1911's, Garands, etc. One of the 1911's is on a custom Caspian frame, with my son's name and birth date as the serial number.

Just about every criminologist I've ever studied argues for more guns. Areas with more guns have less violent crime. In fact, the more criminologists I read, the more apparent it is that the "gun crime" problem is actually an economic (poverty) problem. Here's a stat: remove minority-on-minority (black on black, mostly) gun crimes and the U.S. gun crime rates drop to the same levels or lower than several other countries (including the U.K.). You're in the UK. They recently banned guns and violent crime rose. Criminals like nothing more than knowing that the people in the house they're invading don't have any guns. To answer the original question - and guys, stick to topic, which isn't "are guns good or bad" - yes, I have two. One's a target .22 pistol. The other is a 9mm I keep bedside (locked, but accessible to me in a hurry).

As someone addicted to sourcing, I can't resist.

After controlling for demographic/drug/etc factors, owning a gun increases your chances of being killed 2.7 times.

http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199310073291506

Again, controlling for demographic and other factors, owning a gun increases the chances of a suicide in your home by 4.8 times

http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199208133270705

The banned guns in UK -> increased crime in UK story is a myth.  There was a big change in crime recording and police statistics and whatnot.  Crime actually has diminished significantly since 1997 in the UK (like it has in the U.S.)

http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs2/hosb702.pdf

I'd be interested to see reputable sources for the other stats you note Erik.  I can't help but be VERY suspicious that the fact that areas with high gun ownership have less crime is a confounded association with zero causal link.  People in more rural areas are much more likely to own many more guns than urban residents, and crime is much lower in rural areas for many reasons which have nothing to do with gun ownership.  That leads to a nice negative correlation but doesn't actually show anything.

Just note.  Previous post wasn't meant as particularly anti-gun.  I just get annoyed so many myths have been spread to bolster the pro-gun argument.

I think given the history of our country and where things are it doesn't make that much sense to try to ban guns now, whatever you might think would be the optimal solution in a vacuum.

You'll have to look them up for yourself. I don't really think or worry about this much these days.

I do know that the studies looked at areas of the same type - same economic climate, same population density, etc.

Look up anything by Kleck or the several other criminologists.

It would be silly for the USA to ban guns now since they have been legal for so long, as so many people have them. If guns were illegal from the beginning, it may be a different story. I am lucky where I live, generally the only problem we have is with bikies and very small amounts of gangs. Most of the time its knives as opposed to guns and most won't attack you unless you're by yourself in a dark alleyway at 4am as police are everywhere in the city at night.

Fair enough.  I don't think about these things all that much these days either.  As a statistician it's just a pet peeve of mine that so many arguments out there on social and political issues (from all angles) have essentially grown from someone finding some correlation and inventing a whole causal story that is totally unsupported by the information at hand.

And like you implied, I chime in on these kinds of things sometimes on this board just because I read the forums here all the time, but that's because I'd much rather spend my free mental energy thinking about my swing than political fights!

+1 on the wife retort.

As to the daily carry, isn't that just stressful?  I feel like if I was carrying a firearm all the time I'd spend every moment sizing everyone up and wondering if they might do something that would obligate me to at least draw my weapon, if not use it.  Given I don't live in gang territory or anything, personally that kind of mental stress seems like a higher cost than it's worth.  Just ask cause I'm interested.  Not some leading question trying to pick an internet fight or anything.
