So as the World Cup is 1 week away! If you have any interest in the sport of soccer or just want to guess then that is ok with me but 1) Who do you THINK is going to win the World Cup? and 2) Who do you WANT to win the World Cup? My two are......

1) Brazil
2) Mexico (El Tricolor!! I promise I wont type too much spanish but I am proud of my Mexican heritage! El Tri esta en los primeros 10 en ranking de FIFA! Mexico is ranked 10 in the world and they will be a serious contender in the World Cup. Mexico has qualified for the World Cup 12 times. Thats more than most of the great soccer powers of the world. Mexico's keeper is Oswaldo Sanchez. Mexico fans like myself almost worship the guy. He is called "San Oswaldo" (Saint Oswaldo). As Mexico's best keeper he is also the revered among the best in all of Latin America. Mexico also has a great striker in Jared Borgetti. He is known as the "desert fox." He is a lethal striker whos 14 goals made him the top scorer in the World Cup qualifiers. Mexico has the firepower to be a serious contender in the World Cup! Si se Puede!

I am a rules guy (i dont know how you say that in english) who does soccer games and he is comitted 2 penaltys. Depending on if the player has penaly before then I would prolly yellow card him. He seems to be forcing his way through and that at the the least is a free kick in favor of Mexico. What team is the guy from? I agree with thehillgolfer you should get a yellow. And since the Mexican players are BOTH long sleeved then BOTH of the offence player arms are out away from hos body. Most certainly a yellow.

like i always say...let the boys...er men, play...unfortunately the refs dont always agree, especially when there are like "real" soccer players who fall over and pretend they are hurt, that is probably the most annoying thing ever...probably cuz i'm always the one knocking them down

I think I'll try to watch some of the World Cup this year. I'm not a big soccer fan, but the event is so huge around the world.

I'll be cheering hard for the US as always, but they have a very tough pool. They will be lucky to get out of pool play to be honest. However, if they do, their confidence will be riding high for sure.

Go USA!

On a side note, I fully expect Brazil to repeat as World Cup champs. Ronaldinho is the man!

Edit: By the way, has anyone played the video game, FIFA World Cup 2006? I was going to rent it on XBox 360, but I wanted to see if any of you had played it yet. It looks pretty solid.

I'm hoping for a surprise win of my old-country boys from Poland... They're ranked #3 right now, so maybe it'll be not too much of a surprise

I have to admit I did watch my fair share of the World Cup over the weekend. And I have the TiVo set up for the USA vs. Czech Republic match that is starting right about now. I'll try to watch most of it at lunch. I'm pretty excited, yet worried about the USA's chances.

As for the rest of the World Cup, the Swede match with Trinidad and Tobago was crazy! The fans were in complete shock after that one! Great fans!

    • It's true that it is not always clear where to draw the line of "significant". But I would argue that saving half a stroke or more is definitely more than significant. According to the common meaning of "significant", which is all we have because the word is not defined elsewhere in the rules.  This is irrespective of the two stroke penalty for playing from a wrong place. That penalty is only for when there was no significant advantage.  And it is possible to tell to some certainty whether a stroke or half a stroke was saved by such tools as strokes-gained, experience of officials, etc. Applying the conditions listed in the definition of serious breach.  In the example in which a player gave themselves free relief from a boundary object, if relief was necessary, then that wrong place gave a significant advantage.  Though apparently there is some sort of verbal tradition that tournament officials have a higher standard of what they consider "significant". Much higher than one stroke. And they like to take into account that the player already received a two-stroke penalty, though that is not in the rules for determining what is a "significant advantage".
    • Until I can find some positive things to post about my swing I think it’s about time to…
    • How would you change the rule to make it more "fair", and still be consistently interpreted and enforced?  It may not be perfect, but as a referee I can watch a player and look at the ground surface and make a ruling.  How can it be changed to address different players and their individual height, weight, and shoe size?
    • A bit old.. but this rule is kind of unfair ...  Lets say that you have Emiliano Grillo and Darren Clark playing together on a PGA event and on one hole both hit the ball to the middle of the fairway only 1 inch apart. When they arrive to the ball Darren take his stand and water comes out from the ground and remains there so he procceds take a free drop on a dry area and hit his shot.  Afterwards Grillo takes his stance in the same spot as Clark, but because he is a lot ligther, no water araise from the ground. According to the rules he is not allowed a free drop from the same spot darren had a free drop seconds before. I would love to see this happenning live on TV. Can an argument be made by grillo? could and official use the "spirit of the rule" to let him have a free drop?
