i think it's some kind of idiotic sense of pride or something that stops people from yelling fore. i've only heard a handful of "fores!" on the course this year and seen three times as many close calls without a "fore!" i personally will yell "fore!" without hesitation if there's a fair chance that my ball is heading towards someone.

They will look like even more of an idiot if they don't yell it and their ball hits someone. If somebody yells fore and their ball misses me by 30 yards I don't care. At least they are being extra careful and have the decency to yell fore.

i and usually all the partners ive played with try our best to never put ourselves in a position that will come anywhere close to the group in front of us... and if we happen to catch a "lucky" one that might carry close to anyone we all yell fore...
but...
almost every ball thats come close to whatever group im in ive never heard anyone yelling fore... ive even played as a single waiting for the green to clear and had a foursome bomb all four of their drives around me... one by one... none of them yelled fore... only one guy was apologetic... guess they like the odds of 4 of them against 1 of me...

The same thing that happened to playing by the rules, fixing divots, fixing ball marks, dressing correctly, etc. Like in society the rules of proper ettiquette are eroding at an alarming rate.

I don't disagree with any of that; it could certainly be another indicator of social degradation.

However, bouncing one off a guy's melon without trying to issue a warning is not quite the same as walking in someone's putting line. We're talking possibly blinding someone, mangled teeth, concussion, fractured skull, possible brain damage, etc.; perhaps even killing someone if the ball is traveling fast enough and hits someone the wrong way. I don't quite understand why someone would not give a warning shout if a ball is headed towards someone. It doesn't cost anything. Like one of the other guys said better safe than sorry. It may be just plain stupidity. The guy that dropped one in on us last Saturday came over to look for his ball and mentioned something about "we saw it turning towards you but lost sight of it...". All you can do is shake your head and hope he doesn't procreate.

I was at the range a couple of days ago working on a new swing and I kept pulling my drives to the left, near where the ball-harvesting tractors are kept. A range employee showed up and started tinkering with one of them (out in the open, no protection.) Sure enough, I pulled one toward him. It just seemed so weird to yell "fore!" at the range that all I could do was mutter "uh-oh..." The ball landed about 20 feet from him, but he just kind of looked around and kept on tinkering. Then I put the driver away.

I was playing a round on sunday and we were at the 9th hole. We had spent the whole round stuck behind a horribly slow group that the ranger didn't deal with. About 190 to the green my bro hits his shot after the guys ahead clear the green. He lost sight of it and yelled fore just to be sure. Of course he hit it 10 yards long and it bounced once then hit one of the guys ahead of us in the ass. The guy flipped out and threw my brothers ball off to the side and stormed off even after my brother yelled sorry before we got up there. Didn't get ahead of them at the turn and of course later on in the round the guys are at the next tee box after a par 3. Brothers shot goes right and hits the cart path, we yell fore and it bounced just next to the guys.

After we finish up at 18 we see a pitching wedge laying next to the green. Brother grabs it to take over to them and give it back as they were boozing it up. Didn't even get a thanks for returning their club.

today we were paired up with a nice older couple...
our group played behind a 4some that had no business playing from the tips...
maybe 1 guy out of the 4 would hit a decent shot once in awhile... the rest would barely reach 240 if they werent spraying shots everywhere...
well they clear around the corner of a dogleg and it seemed like it was okay to hit...
i got ahold of my teeshot and it went over the trees... had no clue where they were so i scream "fore!"... the old guy in our group said "uh oh" so i walked over to where he was standing and we could see them peaking thru the trees... my ball landed like 20-25 yrds in front of their cart... oops... they didnt seem pissed when we reached them a few holes up

i can understand hitting an errant shot and it coming close to beaning somebody.. or happening to catch it good and going further than normal...

but somebody please tell me... whats the excuse for someone driving into you when you're walking down the fairway 190-200 yards from the tee??

whats even worse.. is they did it twice. never heard a single fore. the 2nd time i almost got hit in the back of my head while i was just walking towards my ball... just minding my business...

and you can believe i was furious. i pulled my 2 iron out and waited untill they got back in their carts and hit a stinger right back at them. it hit the windshield frame of the golf cart and they got out threatening to sue me.....

this world is full of *******s nowadays.... and the majority of them drive golf carts...

Umm, once you pull out your 2-iron to hit back at someone, you are officially disqualified from bitching about golf course behavior. Being angry is one thing. Willfully endangering someone else is another. "They did it first" is not even close to an excuse. Had you injured one of them with your foolishness, they would have been quite right to sue you -- see how far the "they hit into me first" excuse goes with the judge.

The first hole at my course is a downhill double degleg left-right Par 5. You have to drive over the trees to get out in the middle of the fairway to have a good shot at cutting the right dogleg to hit a wedge to the green.

Its unbelievable how many people tee off AS SOON as your out of their sight. People are sickening. Instead of waiting the extra 6 minutes till their tee time. A couple of people have been hit there.

No excuse for this kind of thing. Pick the ball up and put it in your bag.

Their stupidity does not make thievery ok. Don't take the ball, make sure they see you tee it up and smack it into the woods. That way they can't prove you took anything but get the damn message.

Getting better........

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
