Trust me you can be an 18 handicap without hitting the ball solid and not even drive the ball well. I'm one of those people. On top of that my short game isn't even that great...

Should check out some video drills on Golf Channel website and PGA website. The web has tons of videos showing drills that fix an over the top swing. I'm currently working on a 2/3 swing to fix my overswing and over the top swing. It's working out pretty well. I get a lower ball flight but the shots are not sprayed as much.

Nophase ... try this drill someone showed me ... on the range (of course):
Tee up your ball and place your right foot behind the teed ball in line with your target. Place another tee behind your foot - again in line with the target. Place a second tee next to your ankle, facing your stance (left ankle for righties). Slow down your back swing, come to both a mental and physical stop at the top.

Now, take your back swing over the first tee and swing down and through over the ankle tee - inside to out. Think (in baseball terms) "Hit that inside pitch to right field." Concentrate on keeping the right elbow nearer your right hip on the downswing.

You come over the top if you get to the top of your backswing and start your 'down move' with your hands/arms. Start your downswing with a hip slide towards the target. Finish in that perfect "PGA Finish stance."

Good luck.

It stems from the take away. Try taking it away to the outside and then coming into the ball from the inside. I have this problem. But I pull hook it instead because I trained my hands how to not slice. But really think about the first foot of the swing. If you bring it to the inside, there is no place to go but over the top because you are stuck at the top.

You can also take your stance and then drop your back foot to "accentuate" coming from the inside. My first 10 swings of every practice session are always this drill.

I take my stance and get all square then drop my back foot so the toe is even with my heel of my front foot. Then I concentrate on coming from the inside and hit a nice draw

Are you sure you are comming over the top?

If your initial ball flight is straight or to the right, then you are NOT comming over the top. If your inital ball flight is to the LEFT, then you are comming over the top. So, which direction is your initial ball flight?

    • Day 21, May 25.  Hit "the whole bucket" as practice today after reviewing my Skillest lesson.  I think something crept into my swing last week that wasn't in the lesson, so I went back to the lesson and renewed my focus.  Each ball was a minute or so, 2-3 slow rehearsal backswings and checking the mirror for how far back I was going. "The whole bucket" means every ball I have in the bin at my indoor practice room;  I counted when I put them back, that's six dozen plus six total.  That is probably more full swings than I took over the weekend (excluding range warm-ups) in two rounds!  But these were all with a 6-iron.
    • Day 265 5-25 Hit some balls just to see where i was, no "thoughts' except getting arms in front. Did some recording where i focused on getting chest through and arms in front.
    • Day 76 (25 May 26) - Broke out the "vintage" clubs (MacGregor blades, Wilson 4150 laminates) to work with clubs that are much less forgiving.  Worked through the bag using hard foam balls for the full swings, regular balls for the chips and pitches.  Found it to be a more focused session on making consistent contact.
    • Can you elaborate on this?  There's a par-4 hole at the course I've played the most (was my home course for over a decade, now 50 miles away but I still go and play there) whose green is below the fairway and I realized recently it's one of three holes on the course I've never made birdie, despite that I often have a short iron into the green for my second shot.  It isn't even that I haven't made birdie, but I realize I often don't hit the green.  My typical play of the hole is to have a near-GIR and sometimes I get up and down, but not as often as I would if I were trying to 2-putt.
