I would bet you are quick to complain about lousy service, there is no such thing as a free lunch may be an old saw but it applies here. If everyone only looks at what is best for them and does not appeciat that both sides must be treated fairly, then you have an adversarial relationship. Why do you think legal processes are such a mess. It may not be wrong, but it is selfish and self centered to only think about your own part of the transaction.

Actually, economically speaking, rational self-interest, or doing what you think is best for yourself, in theory will work out. Just do a google search on it. You may get some philosophical links and I'm not sure what they'll say, but worrying about your own self is a well agreed upon economic theory. Rational self-interest should not be confused with self-indulgence at all.

This is an economic issue not a moral issue.

I actually bought a set of new irons (the ones in my sig) off a retailer that treated me very well. Even though I could have gotten a better deal from where I worked, I felt that I had been treated fairly, and had given the impression that I was going to buy from that retailer. Next time, I might not give that impression depending on what I plan to do, but when I bought my irons, I knew I was going to order from that retailer. (If they treated me like crap, then all bets were off though.)

Just from the way I've been treated at some other retailers, I know I will never buy golf equipment from them ever again. There are certain places that I will only go to try equipment and I basically tell the people that I have no intention of buying.

Every stick in my bag came from a mortar and brick golf shop or my club's proshop. I try to do business with them as much as possible.

There is no substitue for the service and the friendships...yes friendships that one can develop over the years.

Spending the money locally bolsters the economy in my backyard.

I've yet to find an item that they are way out of line on, either.

I bought my irons at the golf store because the guy who helped me was very courteous and I figured I should buy at least part of my equipment there.

However in the future if I end up buying a new fairway wood or something I will try it out at the store and may end up buying it online for cheaper just because I figure I have given the golf store adequate business already.

I am on a military salary here... not trying to say we don’t get paid but it isn’t the best, so when i buy anything golf that isnt needed right now its always check it out at the store and buy it online.

Are you aware of the PING military reimburshment / refund program???

Check with them if you are interested in PING gear. You can get some nice rebates.

    • Thank you.  I'll cross it off the list since it isn't going to achieve what I want.
    • While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).
    • Answering that properly would land me in hot water, so I'm not going to. I don't think that many people would do that. I think that in certain circumstances many people would be willing to overlook someone doing that. But I was really referring to what I assumed was Tiger's transgressions (cheating on his wife) not Phil's.
    • No! Is a large part of the human population selfish, apathetic and cuts corners in the name of self-preservation 'more than they would like to admit', yes. Degenerate, scum, etc?.. no!! Most humans/men would not grope a woman like Phil is accused of doing (I think he absolutely did). That is scum. I mean what % of men do you think would do that? Seriously??
