I am hitting my driver well, but on par 5 holes I need a long club off the fairway. I can NOT hit my 3 or 5 wood so I always use my 4 iron. I just picked up an Adams 17* hybrid 3 iron, what can I expect for distance? Will the Hybrid 3 iron be close to a 3 or 5 wood as far as distance?

I suppose it all depends on lofts and lengths of shaft but I'm going to say there's not way your are going to get even a 5 Wood distance out of a 3h. I believe a 2h is generally compared to a 7 Wood.

I thought that 2i = 5w, and since 2i = 2h the transitive property of golf clubs gives us: 2h = 5w

I couldn't hit my 3 or 5 fw either so I built a 2 hybrid in 15* with a Grafaloy Red . Its not as far as a 3 wd , but its accurate , easier to hit , and I'm usually a wedge away on par 5's.

Never hit a 7wd but I just got back from playing a round and love the Hybrid. The hybrid is shorter than my 3 or 5 wood but it is ACCURATE and straight. The way I hit FW's it is very beneficial for me to hit the hybrid even if its a few yards short it a lott better than a woods shot or topping the ball.

I agree. There is no way that a 3H will go what a 5 wood does. I have a Callaway 3H X with steel shaft (I really didn't like it very much and don't use it) and my Fli Hi 3. I can carry both about 190-195 and I can carry my 5 w about 210-220.

Since, with most companies, a 3 hybrid is to replace a 3 iron, 4 hybrid to replace the 4 iron, etc, the 3H should never go as far as a 3 or 5 wood. BUT, I too can't hit my 3 wood at all. Most 3 woods are 15 - 15.5 degrees and I did see the Cobra 1 hybrid at 16 degrees. I love my Cobra 3 and 4 Hs. Best investment I've made in golf. So, hopefully their 1H can replace my 3 wood, even though not as long by a few yards?

What worked well for me was taking my Taylormade Burner 3 wood and having it cut 1 1/2 inches. The inch & half brought it to about the length of a hybrid, but the head mass was still that of a full 3 wood that still produced excellant distance. The big advantage was that since the swing-arc is now shorter, the club is a snap to control and I even find myself using it more in longer grass that I used to before.

i get 20 more yards out of a 3 hybrid then four iron and 10 less yards from a 3 hybrid then a 5 wood good luck

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
