Well in orange county, i play the navy course in cypress, tustin ranch. In LA county I play santa anita gc in arcadia, brookside gc in pasadena, whittier narrows gc in rosemead. A little further out is san dimas canyon in san dimas. I would recommend any of the courses that I just listed.

I'm in Pasadena, usually play Altadena or Eaton Canyon, which are small 9-hole courses. Occasionally play Alhambra, which is also small, but 18-holes. Primary draw of these guys is they're cheap, and I'm a grad student so cheap==good.

In the bag:
FT-iQ 10° driver, FT 21° neutral 3H

Harmonized 52° GW, Tom Watson 56° SW, X-Forged Vintage 60° LW
White Hot XG #1 Putter, 33"

out in pasadena brookside is nice. Vista valencia is fun to play, they have an island green on hole 17 with sand traps on each corner of the island, you also tee from up above on a hill, i just love that hole.

And i agree Vista Valencia is a great executive course. 17th hole is killer, so far im 5/5 on the hole yet to hit water

Los Robles in Thousand Oaks

I wish I was lucky enough to be able to play LACC :(

Also, is Los Robles any good? I heard that it was in poor shap green/fairway wise and overcrowded. The pictures looked amazing on the website though.

i live right next to knollwood and i still have not played it. seems that it always has tournaments going on the days i can play. I hit the range there all the time but it drives me nuts how BAD thier range balls are. Never seen such horrible range balls, they are bald, cracked, gashed, you might get 10 decent balls to hit out of 100. i hit knuckle balls with my irons lol

I disagree... My friends and I play 36 there every Monday. We never have an issue with pace of play.. I do only play there weekdays, so I can speak of weekend play. The greens are always in above average shape in my opinion.. I really like the course. Although to me its a really short Par 70.. You cant beat 36 holes with cart + breakfast for 65 bucks.. LA CC, is amazing, the North Course is going under the knife after this season and getting major renovations. WE get the luxury of playing with a staff member there, and of course he knows the best caddie, and that really helps your putting. :) he told us we were probably some of the last non members to play this course which is kinda cool.. Took us in the Locker Room, which reeks of OLD MONEY.. Showed us President Reagans locker, Keith Jackson ect.. It was quite the experience.. Some of the Estates that house this course are amazing.. Spelling, Hefner, Ritchie.. Just amazing, but the most amazing spread is the one thats currently being constructed.. He bought 1 property, to simply tear down, decided it wasn't big enough and bought the property beside it.. Worked on it for over 1 year, didn't like it, tore it down and started over.. LOL, that's some serious CASH..

Played Knollwood a few times, not 1 of my favorites.. Never fails there is always a 3 group wait at the 10th tee.. which is extremely frustrating.. A lot of older gents play this course, and they tend to socialize before the 10th tee.. Or so that's my opinion.

The best golf in L.A. isn't in L.A. Take an hour drive to Ventura County. Rustic Canyon, Moorpark CC, River Ridge, Sterling Hills, Olivas Links just to name a few.

In L.A. I'd recommend Angeles National. Rancho Park and the Griffith Park courses are nice, just a long round.

Brookside in Pasadena is pretty good, like already mentioned.

around the valley and surrounding area

Often:
Encino, Balboa, Woodley, Hansen Dam, Eaton Canyon, Roosevelt, Van Nuys, Shoal Canyon.

Not as often:

Dad Miller, Wilson, Harding, Westlake Village, Knollwood, Cascades, Simi Hills, Rustic Canyon, Camarillo Springs, Tierra Rejada.

Anyone up for a SandTrap foursome, let me know. I play every weekend and some week days. I am at Weddington in Studio City almost every morning before work (9-hole par-3).

Same here. I have an LA reservation card. let me know when you want to do it. I play nine hole skins game every Saturday at sunrise and then play 18 after that. I can probably get us a time.

I have not played there in a while. It is pretty demanding. Like Tierra Rejada. Very fast greens, lots of elevation changes and places to lose balls. Pretty course. Has GPS on carts.

I'm not a big fan of Olivas Links. When I played there the fairways were hard and uneven. Also the place smelled like a filthy port-a-potty due to the mushroom farm next door.

Rancho is probably the slowest course in CA. I played there one time and it took 2.5 hours to play five holes. Harding and Wilson are good courses (Griffth Park) but the pace of play can be an issue. SubPar

I think I might play like to play rustic canyon this weekend on sunday. $35 for twilight $50 for mid-day sounds like a deal to me. I could maybe go out early on saturday as well, so one of the munis.

The thing that sucks about rustic is the fact that no single reservations are allowed, so I have to standby hoping to get on without a full group.

    • Day 5:  Oops, I missed practice on Mother's Day. But today I got a pile of mirror work done. Tomorrow will be a range day and then City League on Wednesday.
    • I had another interesting ruling last week, in a pro "junior/senior fourball" event.  Near one of the greens was a drain, with the actual grate set maybe 3 or 4 inches below the ground surface.  It wasn't in a depressed area, basically just a straight-sided hole, with the surrounding ground pretty level.  A Player's ball was in some longer grass adjacent to the grate, maybe even overhanging a bit, to the "side" of the drain, so the path of his swing was "tangent" to the circular grate.  The ball was at ground level, so 3 or 4 inches above the metal grate itself.   As I saw it, there was no way at all that the actual Obstruction would impact any reasonable swing path, so I denied relief.  I did talk it over with another official, who said he would probably have allowed the relief, but agreed that it was a borderline call.
    • Here is where we're at so far.  (3) more spots left for Saturday, and (2) Sunday.  Again, if there are more folks interested in both days, we'll give preference to them.
