I ordered a set of Mizuno MX 200s, I was fitted for these clubs and ordered the Dynalite XP S300 stiff (high launch shaft).

The launch angle on 3 - 7 is perfect, but I am hitting planes out of the sky with the 8, 9 and PW. The ball just hangs in the air forever. I tried playing the ball a little further back in my stance and that didn't help. I think my SS was 86 mph when I was fitted (keep in mind that I was fitted with a 6 iron only).

So long story short. What do I do? Should I reshaft just the 8, 9, and PW with a low launch shaft (Dynamic gold). Do you think this will bring the ball flight down. If not, I am going to have to sell these high irons and replace them with MP 52s.

ANy suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

How do you know your ball flight is too high? Does it show a noticeable lack of distance out of your 8-PW?

It's not bad to hit your 8-PW really high. I do. It's actually a really good thing. You'll get the ball to sit quickly.

Most high handicappers actually hit the ball too low.

I have lost 20 yards easy, and if it's windy the ball will be all over the place. You can just see the ball launch straight up. I was playing Taylormade Firesoles from 2001 before I switched to the Mizunos, I hit my PW around 125 - 130 yards and I know what the ball flight was like. This isn't anywhere close. I agree that high isn't necessarily bad, but this is TO high. I was paired with someone who commented "I think that's the highest I've ever seen anyone hit a PW".

Getting the Mp-52 sounds like it better solution than trying to figure it out. The mx 200 and the mp 52 makes for a great combo set. Before I bought the clubs I have no I to had the problem of hitting the short irons too high. It was completly solved once I got better players irons.

Yeah, I think that's the way to go as well. However I now need to get involved with trying to sell 4 clubs on E-Bay. Do you think having high launch shafts in the 200s 3 - 6 , and low launch shafts in the 7 - PW 52s will present any kind of a problem?

You sure you're making a correct swing with the short irons? Only reason I ask is I get kinda "flippy" with my sand wedge which will cause it to sky rocket and come up well short of my intentions.

Having only played 2 rounds with the new clubs, I will be spending a lot more time at the range before I make any final decisions. However, I'm pretty sure I'm hitting down on the ball and not flipping. It's a good point though, and I will check it again.

I have the same problem as well. I am losing at least 10 yards per club with my all my clubs, actually, because of height. But it's my swing. Before you go get new clubs make sure it's not your swing, man. I just got a lesson yesterday, and it was something I'm doing with my hands. I was getting the club head out in front of my hands at contact, and that was causing me to ADD LOFT to the club, resulting in the height, and making the distance less (turning a 7 iron into an 8, an 8 into a 9, 9 into a PW, etc. etc.)

Something you could do that would help is to get them bent. You could take 2 degrees off and see what the flight is like. I have the irons below bent and I really got my distance back with my irons. I felt like I was just hitting my irons too high. It really made a difference and was alot cheaper than getting new irons. It really made me like my irons alot more.

A heavier shaft would help too. You are going to spend alot of money to replace the 7-P and not get that much for the ones you have on ebay.

I would do everything I could before I made a change.

I went from MP 57's with Project X 6.0 to MX 200's with DG XP S300 and my handi went from 14+ to 11+ in 10 rounds.  Lose the ego and make it more fun!!  YES the ball flight is very high (no ballooning though!!) but I don't notice a loss in distance at all.  In fact, the XP's are lighter by 10 grams or so and this allows for a little extra distance despite the high trajectory.  I do, however, like the earlier suggestion about bending the whole set a degree or two just to bring each club down a touch.  My PW is a moon ball at 130-135 yards and I think I am replacing the MX200 GW with a true wedge with wedge flex.

It's never ending..............

I really doubt many people hit the ball too high.  I hit the ball really, really high, sky high.  Many great players hit it as high, or even higher than me.  Rickie Fowler, for example, hits it higher than I do, and guess what?  He's better than me.  You're trying to get the ball to land flat and stop, even with long irons.  Most amateurs can't stop a long iron on the green.  What you think of as losing distance may just be right.  You aren't trying to hit your short irons a long way anyway, 130 yards with the PW is plenty long, even less.

I always tell people that their swings are often so timing based, that they can't rely on much.  I know I am not good enough to gauge whether a club is holding me back, or if I'm making the mistake.  When I can't hit a club, I film my swing.  99% of the time, my swing has changed.  This is mostly mental, but it can also be a swingweight thing that causes me to change.  Most of the time, it's me.  My pro helps me sort it out.  Odds are, if your handicap is north of 10, you aren't consistent enough to really judge what it is, you or the club.  Even a 5 handicap isn't quite good enough to worry.  The difference between two irons especially such short ones, is small.  Make sure the club fits you, yes, but understand that it's more likely something different you're doing.

What shaft did you have in your previous set of irons.  And, what were the lofts of the previous set?  Maybe the PW in the previous set was stronger than the mizzy's?

I'd agree that before you dump a ton of money...go have a pro look at you, including some video. It'll be cheaper in the long-run, plus you might get better. Then, you'll know for sure what the real issue is.

Just curious what the difference (if any) is in swing weight between your new clubs and your old clubs. I also would suspect your swing, especially if the new clubs are lighter than what you're used to it could cause you to release a little too early. That will definitely add loft and cause you to sky the ball. It might just be a matter of practicing with the new clubs until you get our swing dialed in.

    • Day 470 - 2026-01-13 Got some work in while some players were using the sim, so I had to stick around. 🙂 Good thing too, since… I hadn't yet practiced today until about 6:45 tonight. 😛
    • That's not quite the same thing as what some people messaged me today.
    • Day 152 1-12 More reps bowing wrists in downswing. Still pausing at the top. Making sure to get to lead side and getting the ball to go left. Slow progress is better than no progress.
    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
