I like coarse bunkers because they are easy for me to pick my ball off/out of for some reason. But I also like the way I can play an explosion type shot from very fine sand.

1- bad but working on it.. Actually holed out on a shot from the sand last week.

2- really well. I usually just try to hit the ball first and hit down on it. Some of my most impressive shots ever have been from the sand in the fairway.

For greenside bunkers I usually prefer the fine, powdery sand (of which I almost never find since I play primarily municipal courses). I use the Stan Utley method which essentially is a square face and hit closer to the ball. I can open the face and hit the normal explosion when I need to but have found more consistent success with the square face method.

As for fairway bunkers I guess I would prefer a firmer base of sand. I pretty much just play these like I would a fairway shot - I do not open face or anything. I will use an extra club or 2 and try to swing a little easier. Unless I'm around 100 yards or less I'm not even trying to get it on green so much as trying to get ball out and forward. From a long distance back I prefer hybrid out of sand (I used to like a 5 or 7 wood, but dont't carry them anymore).

Damp or wet sand in any bunker is almost no penalty at all as long as the lie is decent. Greenside, it's very easy to spin and control the ball and from a fairway bunker it plays pretty much like any other thin lie through the green.

I dunno, i perfer the sand on the fluffy side. Whenever i have to hit out of firm sand it seems like im always short of my landing target. Its like the sand stops the clubhead from accelerating more than it ususally would.

Firm wet sand is so much easier than fluffy sand. I can not judge the fluffy stuff nearly as well.

I use the pelz method on greenside, fairway it is just like a normal shot except an extra club, choke up, ball an inch or two back farther than normal.
