I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death but here goes another one.

I played with a 3 and 5 wood a few years ago when I first started playing and would always slice them just like my driver. I got a cheapo 3 hybrid from walmart and could hit it straight to 240 or so. My playing partner, who is ten years older than me, would say, "you take your cheat club and I'll still beat you" would tend to spray his woods while I would hit my hybrid straight.

To this day, he still calls a hybrid a "cheat club" even though he now uses my old hybrid and hits it way better than he ever hit his woods.

I hit my Adams Tech OS 4 hybrid from a downhill lie, 235 yards today even with the pin and just off the fringe. I also hit the 3 hybrid 250 yards from level, even with the pin and 5 yards right of green. If that's cheating, call me a cheater! Yardages are taken with my HTC Touch Pro running FreeCaddie GPS.

I can't believe I actually got the old timer to use my old hybrid. He's not really old though. He's 45 and I'm 35. I think he's gonna come around and put his woods to bed for good.

Hybrids are great. I have to wonder how far you would hit the driver if you learned how to hit it? Get a good driver and a lesson or 2. Put in the time. You can choose when to pull it out but it is nice to have if you need to go to it.

Work on your short game before anything you will survive with 250 off the tee but your scores wont drop until you get your short game worked out. Once you work on your short game then learn how to hit the driver.

I hate hybrids... Obviously they are good clubs though, because they have stuck around and everyone seems to have them. I just stick with the old things called low irons... I actually probably hit my 3-4-5 irons more purely than any club in my bag, so I will stick with them for now. I can hit woods pretty well too, so I don't want a hybrid for off the box or anything like that. Funny that your "older" friend doesn't like them and you do. At my home course it seems that all the older gents use them and not many of the younger, good players do.

Wish I had the swing speed to hit the longer irons and especially out of the rough. I can still manage to hit the hybrids quite well out of the rough unlike my long irons.

    • I have been on a roll in November. Today was a 77 (69.2/115, 6,050 yards) on a wet course with dew covered bumpy greens. Better greens and I might have shaved a few more strokes off the score.
    • So, it appears to me that everyone is bringing out some version of the zero-torque, or square to square, or torque balanced, putter.  What ever name you want to give it seems like everyone has one of these types of things in their line up now.  It reminds me of about 10 years ago, when everyone had to have a counter-balanced putter in their line-up.  Callaway Media | Videos, Podcasts, & Episodes | Golf Content The Official source for Callaway golf clubs, golf balls and gear.
