Thanks for the advice, guys. I'll hold off on the new club idea for now.

@ ItsAllRelative, zeg: That's the idea behind my initial proposal. I figured on getting a shorter shaft so I wouldn't have to choke down on it, and because I didn't plan on using the 2i anywhere else. But the lowest club in my bag is a 4i, and while I don't have much experience hitting it, my 5i hasn't been too helpful in those situations and I figured that a 4i wouldn't be much improvement.

Sounds like the best plan of action is to (try to) make friends with my hybrid, and also to practice hooding my 4i.

Thanks for the info, Meddle. Looks like someone already had my idea. I'll consider it if I don't think I can make my normal clubs do the job for me. It looks like a better idea than my original one.

Believe it or not, back when I was younger and playing a lot more, I actually carried a 1 iron! I used it off the tee occasionally, as well as using it a ton when I needed a low punch from under trees. I could easily shape it either direction.

No way I would use it now, so I have started punching out with my choked down 3W. It is an Adams Speedline 3W, which is very much like a hybrid. Cuts through the grass well, and keeps the flight low when played back and punched.

No need to buy and modify a club for only this use. You can even use 6 or 5 iron with the proper technique. The difference of a 3 iron and 5 iron is the length and loft. If you tilt a 5 iron forward, you can effectively give it the loft of a 3 iron. For these shots I take the club I need, perhaps one more or less, depending on distance and any obstacles. I move the ball a little bit behind in my stance, but not too much. I might also grab down on the club. Close the face a little bit then make a 3/4 swing and punch the ball out low with my hands well in front of the ball at impact. That will de-loft the club and make the ball go low.

yep- +1. Only thing I don't do is close down the face. I find hooding the club

gives me a draw with this shot more often than not.
