I was just checking the leaderboard on pgatour.com, and noticed something interesting. (at least, it was to me) 9 players withdrew after their first rounds, and 6 of the 9 players shot par or better in their first rounds..?? And there were also 2 DQ's on top of that, which isn't uncommon..but still added to the rather large number of players leaving after the first round.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows why there were so many that WD'd, after shooting pretty decent rounds? Not all of those guys played at Bethpage, so it can't just be the old "exhaustion" excuse. It just seemed interesting to me, so I thought I'd inquire here......

They didn't all withdraw immediately after the first round. Many played yesterday and did not finish their second round, and had no way to make the cut, no matter how they finished. Now, they can't just withdraw in the middle of the day, but they can withdraw overnight, and there's no sense in coming back at 7AM if nothing you do matters.

Azinger accidentally used a non-conforming ball, and had to be DQ on account of that. Dean Wilson needed to chip-in to make the cut; when he failed to hole the chip, he didn't bother putting and signing a scorecard, but just picked up the ball. The penalty for this is DQ.
