When I started to play today, my long irons were just terrible. I was hitting a low shot that went off to the right... I think I was lifting up and not turning my hands over...

So, I began hitting some 5 irons and 6 irons off the tees just for fun, and I started to get better... I was actually focusing on not bringing my club back really far (more control) and turning my hands over... Anything else I should focus on?

But, I shot a record score on the first time I played the back tees! A 78 :D

Must be a long hitter for you to hit 5/6 irons from the tee. Wish I could do the same. If I don't carry 200 on most par 4's or par 5's, I won't reach the fairway and that would mean trouble.

Practice most with the wedges, hit some occasional long iron before you go back to wedges.

It does sound like your pulling your head out and allowing the club face to close on impact imo
