I'm looking at buying a/some wedge(s) and I've seen a lot of deals with gunmetal finishes around. I saw the sticker on a 588 DSG with a gunmetal finish and it said that

The GunMetal finish on this wedge will wear, fade and rust after repeated use in bunkers and over time.

Does this mean

a) nothing, it's just a standard "don't expect the club to look brand new forever" warning, or b) that gunmetal similar to RTG finishes, in that it's supposed to rust? Or, c) that gunmetal is just an alternate finish on a club that wears off. In the event of (c), would a chrome finish last longer? I'm not overly concerned with looks, but the gunmetal finish looks very nice. But ultimately I'd prefer something with a hardy finish.

Chrome will last longer. A true gunmetal finish, say black oxide, adds only a mild corrosion resistance. As the finish wears off, the metal is unprotected and rust may/will naturally form.

Are wedges supposed to rust, or is that a certain type? I'm a fairly new golfer, and one of the guys I golf with sometimes told me that the 50 degree wedge he has is rusted on purpose.

I know that some types are. Like for the Cleveland 588 model, the RTG finish is supposed to be rusted. I've heard of people who leave them in a bucket of water over night the moment they get them to get the rust started.

Frankly, it seems odd to me, but if it doesn't inhibit the usability of the club, then to each his own.

I'm pretty sure that's the model SW I have and it is rusty. It doesn't inhibit the playability of the club, nor does it increase it. I think it was a marketing gimmick that said, "rust=more spin". I don't think that has made a different in my wedge play...

Maybe the idea is that rust is rougher and will do a better job of gripping the ball on contact.

For those who like to maintain the GunMetal finish, is re-finishing every X hits a standard practice?

No, haven't heard of anyone refinishing the gunmetal versions; they're usually trying to accelerate the appearance of rust by soaking them in something corrosive (IIRC, its coca-cola or pepsi).

Have you considered Black nickel, if the wedges you are looking at offer it? Not as bright as chrome, not as dark as gunmetal, got the same protective finish as the chrome and got great feel. I've got black nickel on my wedges and love it.

True, most people do seem more eager to encourage it than discourage it.

I can't find a black nickel version of the 588s. The 588 TA is only made in Chrome now, and the 588 DSG is made in Chrome, RTG, and GunMetal.

I've actually ordered a 60* GunMetal DSG. If I feel so moved, I might get one for my GW as well. In making that purchase decision, I'm not sure if I'll choose the same finish. It really is a nice look, but you can get Chrome re-finished.

    • I’d go with the Titleist if you liked the look of the blades but were suffering with distance. They should be a little more forgiving than a full blade and still retain some workability. Also remember to consider the shafts each have as this will be a big contributor to how they feel. Clemsonfan is right though… get fit or spend a bit of time on a launch monitor 🤙
    • Day 28: 2026.01.30 Managed to make time for a few swings out back today. Need a proper bit of range time this weekend.
    • Day 30, 1/30.  Six minutes this morning hitting a few more range balls, indoors, off a mat, into the net.  Did this before leaving the house.

    • Hi All my New Year’s resolution was to start playing golf again. I’ve caught the bug and am really enjoying hitting balls at a couple of my local ranges.looking forward to getting back out on courses in the spring. Based in the UK and 38 years old, I’ve been playing since I was a kid. Best handicap I’ve held is 2 in my mid 20s. Over the past 10 years I’ve played once or twice a year, sometimes with friends or for work. Could shoot 4-5 over, but just as easily shoot 15-20 over. I’ve moved to South Wales and am very lucky to be near some world class links courses, which gives me even more motivation to get playing again! I will start looking for a local coach in my area when I have more time to invest, but I recalled scouring this forum a few years ago and finding some good tips and advice so wanted to give it a try to see if there were any glaring issues I could fix in the meantime!  A few swings below… one from 1st week Jan and one from today. I have fixed my P1 takeaway to my liking and am now working on what I see as pretty severe early extension & hip thrust. Also terrible hip rotation. I’d like confirmation that this is indeed a problem and and suggestions on a few good drills. Thanks for reading 🙂 I've been Playing Golf for: 30+ years My current handicap index or average score is: 10ish over My typical ball flight is: mid The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: push right with irons, hooks and push with driver!  Videos:
