Not in majors, but in wins. Currently 68 to 73 in favor of Jack.

I don't think he will, I don't think he will play in enough tournaments to break it this year. I would guess he will play 8 more tournaments before the year is out and while he can will at an alarming rate, I'm not sure he will win 5 of them.

Next year.

I still haven't seen anything to convince me that he's going to win a major this year either.......

.....note, I wouldn't be surprised if he did, but right now given a choice of the field against Tiger, I've got to bet with the field.

Just to play devil's advocate...

You don't think he'll play five or six more tournaments this year? Cuz that's all it may take. Remember 2006, when he won out the rest of the year?

Tiger's win rate is about or near 30%. I'm guessing it will happen next year.

Even though he seemed in control yesterday, he only won with one shot because of a very good putt, which he just as easily could have missed. AK had a terrible day, but was still close. At Bay Hill he won with the last putt, could just as easily have missed it and lost a playoff.

As few tournaments as Tiger is playing, I don't believe he will surpass Jack this year, probably next. That's not saying it couldn't happen, but he's not as supreme as he was before. Some years ago, during his best years, I could've believed it, but not today.

I was thinking he will play the 2 majors, 2 WGC tournaments and probably 2 more regular events. I have no doubt he can win the 2 regular events and the 1 of the 2 WGC (Firestone), but the 2 majors, don't think he will win both.

I'll have to say no, but it's a no-brainer by next year. Further, though, with Snead at 82, it's pretty assured that Tiger will be the all-time victory leader by end of 2011. He only needs 32 to reach 100 victories. From 2005-2007 he averaged 7 wins per year. That puts him at 100 wins before the age of 40, and I can't imagine he'll have less than 6 more majors in that lot.

100 wins, 20 majors = UNTOUCHABLE. Tiger will have done that in an era when golf was at its peak level, when the PGA tour is comprised of THE best players around the WORLD, he'll have smoked them all, time after time. The argument will be laid to rest. Forget what he'll do if he even has the inkling to play the Champions tour (which I doubt he will).

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

I think Tiger could do it this year,if he wanted to play a lot of events. But,he only seems to play the WGC`s,majors,"mini" majors on tough courses, and tune-ups.The Tour is what it is because of Tiger, and the rest of the Tour knows it[players]. I think they`re very thankful he only plays 15 a year, gives Phil,Kenny, ect a chance to win a few. The Nike "welcome back,Tiger" commercial says it all. If he stays healthy,Tiger will break every record worth breaking before he`s finished, and I don`t think there will EVER be a more dominating figure in golf, never ever.

It's just the nature of sports. Decades from now, Tiger will be at The Masters commenting on a young player who "plays a game with which I am not familiar."

No on Tiger getting to 73 this year, but I think two years from now he'll be passing Snead's record.

He only finished one over?

And to go against the trend, I believe Tiger will tie Jack.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
