i was watching the golf yesterday and the commentaors claimed david toms (i think it was him) had imporved driving accuracy and distnacy by hitting his driver on a downswing. Wht would this be

I don't think hitting the driver on the downswing is all that uncommon on the tour...my thinking is that it keeps the ball on a lower trajectory and misses with a lot of side spin probably don't get away as bad as with a higher ball flight..........

Bobby Clampett endorses this style, IIRC. There should be a thread on his "impact zone" somewhere. I don't know much about it, other than what I hear others say about him saying this.

that's how i hit it most of the time, unless the fairways are wet. it does take a bit to work out timing issues, but this was actually the way i taught myself to hit a driver so it's actually harder for me to hit it on the upswing. just put the ball back a little in your stance to where your 3 iron should be and tee it low, steepen your swing plane a little bit, and release the club a split second earlier than normal. it's a lot more accurate because there's not as much room for error, it feels like a seven wood shot except it's a driver. and depending upon your height, you may have to choke up a little bit on it.

That's Bobby Clampett. Personally, I think he's a little bit nuts. Downward attack drivers are incredibly hard to fit (the Stack and Tilt drivers tend to do this) because they have a low launch angle with a lot of spin - the exact opposite of "high launch, low spin" that everyone aims for.

He's always pushing his "hit down at it with every club in the bag" thing from his book. For the vast majority of swings, sure. But not off the tee with a driver (nor with a putter, of course, but he doesn't say that at least).

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
