After a year of marriage my wife tells me, "My grandparents have a house on some golf course in Florida." I wondered what had taken her a year to divulge this information. She checked and it turns out they live at the PGA Village in Port St. Lucie. Anyway, I quickly made plans for a Christmas getaway to Port St. Lucie.

First, has anyone ever played these courses? How are they?

Second, are the prices for real? $35 for 18 with a cart. That seems insanely low for a Pete Dye or Tom Fazio designed course. By way of comparison, Milwaukee courses are typically in the $35-40 range without a cart. And with the exception of Brown Deer GC, they aren't anything to brag about.

Funny post! I live only a short ride away and have never been there if you can believe it. I do have some friends that drove up and from what I recall, said it was quite nice. I'm sorry I don't have any better info for you.

Speaking of houses though, you can probably pick up one for really cheap there, Port St. Lucie is pretty much the foreclosure capital of the world.

Many Florida courses get pretty cheap in the dead heat of summer, and get expensive in the fall/spring.

True, I didn't realize he was talking about summer. Courses can be super cheap down here, especially the more inland they get where breezes are less commonplace and it gets crazy HOT.

Prices do include golf car at PGA Golf Club . In the summer, the rates are in the ballpark of what you are quoting. Last winter, it ranged up to $100 per round, which is still very competitive for the area.

Courses were recently described as the "Greatest Triple Play" in Florida by GOLF.com. Ranked in Top 50 by Golf World and 75 Best Golf Resorts by Golf Digest. PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance ranked in Top 10 by Golf Digest for practice and instruction facilities. PGA Historical Center is home to the Ryder Cup Trophy and the 4 major Championship Trophies in golf.

Hope this helps!

I've stayed at PGA Village and played all of the courses there. They are definitely worth playing. They have a great practice facility too. I didn't play in the Summer so the green fees I paid were significantly more than what you quoted

What are the rates like in December?

Rates go up after labor day. I don't know what the exact green fees are. I think in the $75-$90 range, but not certain. They have some multi-round deals. I'd suggest calling the pro shop.

Website doesn't seem to give in-season rates but if the rate you quoted above is true, this is pretty good for Florida. I'll try to drive up later in the year and give it a shot. I will say that this part of the state has some really nice terrain that is conducive to great golf courses.

$75-$90 isn't too bad. I'll never get to play any other Dye-designed course for that rate. My wife thinks her grandparents may get some perks beings residents of the PGA village. At under $100, this is a much better place to be than Milwaukee in December.

If you are a range rat and go through many buckets, the range has an unlimited option. Not sure if it's still offered as I haven't been there in a year, but it is great deal if you like to beat balls or want to work on something.

I am venturing down to Florida during the first week in March. Can anyone recommend which course they prefer of the three longer courses here? I saw if you tee off after 2 pm it's only $60...THAT'S SICK!!! I have never had the privilege to play a Dye or Fazio course before. Very much looking forward to it.

Are there any other courses in that area that are must plays? I am staying about 45 mins away and I am looking for some stellar golf!

The two Fazio courses are pretty good, the Dye course is a nightmare-no locals ever play it. Better deals on better courses are Meadowood in Fort Pierce or Florida Club in Stuart.

Thanks for the information. I will be driving in from Barefott Bay, which I believe is about an hour north. Would those other two courses be farther south? How much farther would they be.

If the unlimited range deal still exists, that's a great way to practice the short game. I remember getting balls from a basket full of Titleists. Plus there are many practice sandtraps, each with different types of sand.

From Barefoot Bay take either US1 or I 95 south to Fort Pierce. Meadowwood is off the Orange Ave. Exit, better GPS it, PGA is farther south off I 95 at St Lucie West and Florida Club is another 20 min south also right off I 95. The range I referred to is the St. Lucie Driving Range on US1 near Easy Street.

I have been to the PGA village. Stopped in there before one of the Mets spring league games. Thanks for the heads up, I am going to certainly consider those other courses.

Stay away from the Dye Course! Tricky, goofy golf. The other two Fazio courses are great, especially if the very undulating greens are fast.
