I currently am using Titleist 962's and been wanting an upgrade to newer irons. I have been looking into the Titleist 695mb and the Mizuno mp-67. My question is are these newer clubs as forgiving as the 962's? I hit my 962's well and I am steadily improving since getting back into golf.

I guess my concern is I don't necessarily need an extremely forgiving club but do not want to limit myself and make the game harder if I'm not constantly practicing.

If neither of these are forgiving clubs, and suggestions? TIA

Neither of those are going to be easy to hit, considering the sticks your coming from. I know from experience that the 695mb's are amongst the most unforgiving irons i have ever hit. You really have to have a grooved swing to game those. I would go with the 695cbs or if you want blades, perhaps a mixed set like the 735cm or ZB forged.

I did exactly that last December. Played 962's for 10 years and switched to 695cb's. I love the 695's. Forgiveness is on par with the 962's, which is to say, for a cavity backed club, not much. I gained about a half club due to a little stronger lofts, great forged looks and feel and very workable. I couldn't be happier.

i too played the 962's for several years (9 straight years) and loved them. i honestly dont think there is any need to change irons if you are hitting them good. i personally think the 962's are just as good as anything else on the market these days. one of my all-time favorite irons for sure

There are people who swear they're among the best irons Titleist ever made. I wouldn't necessarily argue against that!

Interesting....I was just assuming that considering the 962's were 10-15 yrs old that newer irons would provide newer technology. Figured newer irons hit longer and are more forgiving across the board. Am I wrong in that assumption?

personally, i dont think there is a lot of difference between the 962's and a similar (players cavity) iron from today. i really dont think you'd see or feel that much difference. i know some people will feel differently, but i dont. im playing with irons that came out 6 years ago and have no intentions of upgrading to something newer because i hit these fine and i know how to use them. i also would have no problem putting the 962's back in my bag. that is one of the best designs ever made imo

There are newer clubs which are more forgiving, but they are not in the same class as the 962's. I played 962's for about 10 years and would consider those "players irons." Some of the newer MP's from Mizuno are more forgiving than the 962's, but not by much. If you can hit the 962's solid though, I would not worry about finding more forgiving clubs. Go hit some new things at the range, but if you find its not broke, don't fix it!

I went from Titleist 962's (6 years) to Ping S58's and recently, to Tour Preferred.

I would think that some sort of cavity back would suit what you're used to. I went from handicap 24 to 6 with the 962's and wanted a more playable club but still with a cavity.

Go try some cavity/semi cavity irons out. Don't look at what the club is or who the manufacturer is. I'd never have considered either of my replacements but hitting them proved it's bad to have preconceptions!

Bingo for you!

I've been very happy with the 695MB, I think that they are a great set of irons. I don't know how one gauges "forgiveness" so I can't really comment there other than to say that I don't find mishits that punishing, no more than any other forged muscleback anyway.

    • I don't have enough details to know what to tell you, man. If they were walking across, to play devil's advocate, maybe just wait another 10 seconds next time.
    • Day 11: Putts with a metronome and worked on some feels for greenside shots.
    • I realize the frame cuts off my tail but wanted to specifically see my hand path and club shaft and head travel from A5 to A7 with the grip and posture work I have been doing . This might be the shallowest I have managed to get the club head to enter into impact. I like the finish much more as well.
    • Context:  I used to play golf very regularly (and when I'm playing regularly, I'm on TST regularly).  In summer 2022, I got my handicap down to a personal-best 11.9.  Unfortunately, in the three years since then, I've had far less time to play, and didn't really make the time to practice.  I've played a bit more the past few months, and I anticipate having a lot more time to practice starting in about two months, at which point I'm hoping to go back to my old practice habits (practicing daily, Evolvr lessons, spending more time on TST (come to think of it, I can do that important last part now)).   But it was thinking about how different my nines have been a few times in the past month or so that made me wonder if there was a thread here about it, and sure enough, there was.  In the past month or so, I've had a 38-46 and a 45-39.
