Hi all. I have a pitching wedge that is 46 degree loft and standard length based on my height. I have a Gap Wedge that is 50 degree loft and is and inch and a half longer than my standard length based on my height. Considering the Gap wedge is longer than what is recommended for me do you think that it will go the same distance as my pitching wedge? I haven't had a chance to get to the range lately but a friend of mine made the comment that since the club is longer the Pw and the Gap wedge should go about the same distance. If that's true I'm trying to decide which to keep in the bag. What are your opinions and or suggestions?

Well to tell you the truth ive always hit my pitching wedge farther then my gap wedge, but i guess thats just me. Maybe go to a range and find out just how far your average is for both and determine the course your playing and choose which one will suit you most on that givin course. But its all up to you in the end.

The gap wedge is higher degree loft, so it should naturally travel a shorter distance than the PW. Same reason your 8 travels further than your 9, etc. The extra shaft length may add some distance to it, but you can always choke down on it or have it cut down and re-gripped.

Probably not just you. But anyway, the OP was talking about the

shaft of his gap wedge was longer.

The gap wedge will likely go close to the same distance as the PW, but due to the longer shaft you may find its not as accurate.

I didn't think about the accuracy issue.

Longer club and more loft does sound like it would be less accurate, I agree. 1 1/2 inch longer is pretty much. Compared to your PW, it'll be closer to a 7i. If you're comfortable with the PW and don't need both clubs, I'd toss out the 50º, maybe add another one with length fitted to you.

15th club... I'm gonna have to agree with zeph on this one. if you're not comfortable with this wedge then I definately wouldn't keep it in the bag. I'd get one that I would fit into my set. Thats why there are so many out there. I know personally I love vokey wedges and it took me the first six years of playing to figure that out. best thing to here would be just try alot of em out. if ya have friends that have different wedges than you ask them if you can try theirs while playing a round with them. 1 question for ya, how close to rtj ridge course are ya?

In my opinion, I don't think the extra inch and a half will overcome the 4 degrees difference, but it also probably won't do a good job of bridging the gap between your PW and SW, which is the whole point. I'd take some length off the gap wedge, and it'll fit in nicely. If you can salvage the grip, it won't cost you anything. If you can't, it's only $5 to get a club that will fit your set much better.

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
