For the most part, I play public courses. Yesterday, I played (for the first time) what is considered the most difficult country club course in the state (Pete Dye design). I struck the ball extremely well and putted great (3 birdies and 4 pars). However, by about the eleventh hole, I commented that all my approach shots were landing barely on the green if I didn't ask the guy with the sky caddie the yardage (I wouldn't ask if I was near a sprinkler head)

Sure enough the sprinkler heads had the yardage to the very front fringe of the green. The yardage at the tee boxes (on these in-ground stone markers) was to the middle. There were occasionally markers on the cart path (to the middle). There were occasionally large in ground markers in the fairway (to the middle) I have never played a course before where the only yardage printed on an object was to the front fringe.

The course was beautiful and challenging, but I found it annoying that the large in-ground stone markers listed the distance to the middle and the sprinkler heads to front. There should be consistency with yardage documentation on the course. I played great and had an awesome time (and won $), but the yardage thing irks me.

Doesn't the scorecard or some other local information board state which part of the green the various markers measured to?

I'm not sure if I got the issue at hand. Were the same type of marker used to measure distance to different parts of the green? Meaning a sprinkler head measured to the middle on one hole and front of it on the next? Or the in ground markers varying from hole to hole?

The in-ground stone markers, cart path, and tee box markers measured to the middle. The sprinkler heads measured to the front.

I am used to all measurements being to the middle. Occasionally, at some high end courses, they'll document front, middle, back on the sprinkler heads and other objects. I had never played a course before where the sprinkler heads measured only to the front. I was surprised to find that every other marker on the course measured to the middle, but the sprinklers to the front. I find this weird.

I was walking and the only person with a scorecard was in a cart. I arrived 20 minutes before teeing off, but went to the putting green to get familiar with Dye's greens.

What club was it? Many clubs provide the daily pin sheets with X-Y distances from the front.

Yep, one of the guys had a daily pin sheet. I played with three members (two were former club champions). They play the course 4-5 times a week so they were very familiar with it. The guy with the sky caddie also had a pin sheet. The injured person in the cart had a scorecard.

I arrived 20 minutes prior to tee off, but went to the practice green to familiarize myself with Pete Dye greens. It would have never dawned on me to ask if the sprinkler heads measured to the middle or front (I've only seen them measure to the middle)

Well, now you know. Hardly a reason to be "disgruntled," unless it's at yourself for assuming.

Yep, if they use pin sheets, it's actually preferable that the yardages are to the front, since the tee sheets who you the distance from the front to the pin. This way you can just look at the yardage and add the pin distance. Otherwise you have to know the depth of the green, take 1/2 that and figure out the +/- from the middle based on the pin distance from the front.

I always buy and carry a course guide when playing. Especially on courses I've never played before. I've played on courses which have in ground markers to the front and to the middle, so I always check it whenever I'm at a new course. All of this is usually noted in the course guide.

LOL

All the courses around here have serious yardage marking problems . . . one course has a par three marked at the tee box "165 yards". When we used the range finder, it was 225 to the middle of the tee. After a while, you get used to guessing . . .
