At the top of my backswing, when my wrists hinge my right hand pulls away from the club so my left thumb is no longer enclosed by my right palm. As far as my own personal observatioins to fix this go, I think trying to keep my elbows/arms closed tightly on my chest helps to fix this as well as making sure my right elbow doesn't leave my body and poke outwards from my backside.

Also, I tend to feel myself lose my grip on the follow through. I tried rolling my wrists over more and it seems to help.

Are my fixes proper? What do grip problems like this cause as far as swing faults go and shot faults? Any help is much appreciated I hope I pointed myself in the right direction.

I have sort of the same problem, i notice on my follow through i kinda lose grip and my right thumb moves on the club

I think I have a fine grip... at address. I need to keep my hands on the club throughout the swing and I feel this has to do with my wrists and arms for some reason.

Grip doesn't just have to do with where your hands are placed on the club. It also has dynamic aspects. In the same way that you can be in the correct positions in your full swing and hit poor shots, your hands can be in the proper place on the grip and still be faulty. If you are a righty, and you are losing the connection between the right palm life-line and the back of the left thumb, then you haven't done a good job of maintaining pressure with your right hand. This can lead to a loss of extension on the backswing, which has plenty of negative consequences that you can google. When you take your grip, try pressing your right hand life-line into the back of the left thumb. Maintain this pressure at the top as if you were pushing your left hand away from you. If done properly, you will notice a number of benefits including a more synchronized arm swing and shoulder turn, and greater extension. Now don't lose the extension coming down, which is the tendency when swinging hard from the top, and you'll find your consistency and power are both improved. Good luck.

You're absolutely welcome. I know your particular problem from experience. Grip changes are some of the weirdest things to incorporate, probably because our hands are so sensitive. Be patient and good luck.

    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.

    • Day 18: drill swing in my garage after getting home from work. 
    • Day 32 (12 Dec 25) - What was the Friday shootout became a practice round due to lack of enough players (temps kept a lot of the regulars home).  Used it to dial in some playing distances as I played back a set of tees to force alternate club selections.  Plenty of long approaches - every club was put into action thru the course is 18 holes. Was not a GiR day but rather nGIR (5 up and down pars).  Pin placement was tough - the smallest miss would see the ball roll just as far past or even off the green.  Was a great day of battling what the course was dealing. Overall - I finished 5 strokes over my average score of 86.
