Im about an 18 handicap and looking for a nice set of irons with some forgiveness and playability. I was recommended the taylormade r7 irons. Are these what im looking for? and is their a difference between the 07 irons and the 08 irons? They look the same!

I recently bought new irons ... I had been playing beginner - no name sets that my dad got for me from the beginning. I had always liked the look of the Callaway X-18/X-20 irons but I too didn't know what kind of irons to get.

I went into Golfsmith to look at irons and the guy told me that Callaway & TaylorMade are 2 of the really good clubs out, so I took a couple of irons from each & hit them in the indoor mat they had. I really liked the solid feel of the Callaways, so I decided on those. The guy told me that he also thought the Callaways were a better club.

At that time, the X-20 had just come out, and they were $900. Golfsmith still had a bunch of the previous year's X-18 as well, for 1/2 the price. The guy told me there wasn't much change in the X-18 & X-20 so I saved myself several hundred bucks & bought the X-18.

Long story short, I would say that you should definitely go somewhere that you can get fitted for the clubs; you should definitely hit the clubs a bit to see if you like the feel; and if you buy somewhere that has a return policy (like Golfsmith), they you can return the clubs within 90 days and get 90% of your money back to buy something else.

Now, I do not work for Golfsmith, and it's possible the guy selling me the clubs was full of crap & either just wanted to sell me something or didn't have a clue what he was talking about. But I've had the irons for probably a year or so and I love them! I'm sure there are MANY other great golf stores out there, it just happens that I went there because they were the closest golf store to me.

Go to a local dicks sporting goods or some golf store and try out some demo irons and see what you like. My irons are very similar to the r7's, basically look just like them and cost a lot less. I like them though, they're pretty forgiving and thats what I need, definitely a step up from the walmart irons I was using before. Id look at the callaway X-22's as well, ive hit those and they felt pretty good too.

bang for the buck go with R-7's, a lot of places have them for 399 right now (golfsmith, dicks, tgw, rogerdunn) if your willing to spend another 300 id recommend the 09 Burners, they're DESIGNED for game improvement and "intermediate shot shaping"

callaways x18-r are same price as the r-7's but to be honest youll get much forgiveness with the r7s and even more with the 09 burners (i hit shots off the toe and heel and still got amazing distance with the burners.)

I wouldn't recommend TM irons. I just don't like them. But that's just me.

One of my friends has the r7 tp's, and the other has the regular r7 irons. They both love them, but I'm with Golfaway, I never had good feel with Taylormade irons.

I also agree their a good club. But I personaly would buy them (even though I did and returned them) They lack feel, but their a decent enough club.

I really dont like the feel of TM, or Calloway's Irons (cavity back) Look at a set of Adams their cheap, great clubs that will give you hybrids and irons.

    • 12 July 25 - Got invited to a Sat morning round with some friends.  Was a decent round - sort of a pre-tournament round for the 1st of Aug.  Best play of the day - lost ball off the tee on 7.  Took the drop, hit 3rd onto the green, missed the par putt by 3 inches short - middle of cup.  Was a good bogie recovery.  Learned a valuable lesson - the wedge is your friend, the collars on the greens are just long enough that they kill the putter (unless you hammer it).  Back to more of those nice chip and roll drills. &nbsp
    • Day 357: played 27 holes. +6 total - pretty pleased. Only negative was missing the hole 3 times from within 4 feet…
    • Day 1: 7/12/25 exactly 60 minutes of chipping practice. Unlikely to be able to practice very much but sure had a blast today!
    • Didn't score better, but made better swings on the course today. I found a bit of success on range pre-round, just hitting like what felt like 60-70% shots. It was more right elbow and right wrist angles in the downswing. Driver took a bit to work out the giant toe push draws I was hitting.
    • Played in the first round of Shawnee Hills  course tournament. went 42+46. Just lost energy on the back nine.  Lots of pars and way too many big scores. Course has a lot of areas to lose a golf ball. This is the adjusted score.  I had to return to the tee twice. The first the guy I played with didn’t tell me my ball bounced into the trees behind the green. 😡 the 2nd one I hit a decent draw over the corner of a slight dog leg left. I didn’t know 15-20 yards from the fairways was nasty weeds. I also 4 putted and 3 putted a few times. I flubbed like two chips. Too long of backswing.  I was happy with my ball striking. Probably B-. Found a bit of something on the range before the round. I’m starting to actually feel my right arm position better with what I am working on. I striped some irons today.
