Looks like Wie getting sick out there got Jeff Gove all warm and fuzzy:

"She just said, `I'm going to withdraw,' which was good because she was holding us up again," said Jeff Gove, one of Wie's playing partners. Gove missed the cut with a 1-over 143.

"I saw she was hurting, but she never said anything," Gove said. "And she was walking real slow, which I thought was inconsiderate again because we're trying to keep up. If we get on the clock again, that's painful."

"I played like shit." -Greg Norman after the '96 Masters.

I'm not a fan of her playing PGA Tour events, but Jeff Gove just won the SandTrap "jackass of the week" award. That's just awful.

She was seriously struggling out there from the looks of it on Golf Central. I'm glad she is ok.

When Michelle Wie wins a few times on the LPGA Tour I'll be a little more comfortable about her competing with the men on the PGA tour. I'm sure Jeff Gove was a little frustrated with the circus atmosphere that goes on around her.

He probably would take it back if he could.

Probably.

That being said, I have no tolerance for slow play. If you're having such a hard time walking at a reasonable pace that you're holding up play, withdraw sooner. I wonder what took her so long, except maybe desperately trying to finish (because, unlike others, I don't believe she's a quitter). It was very obvious she was struggling with her health early on. P.S. Anyone who thinks "she's from Hawaii, she should be used to the heat" has never spent time in Hawaii or the midwest when it's hot. I hate to bring up clichés, but "it's not the heat, it's the humidity." Hawaii usually has a cool breeze off the ocean (just like where I lived in FL), while the humidity in the midwest and where I live these days is 85% or so. When the temperature gets up there, it's damn hard to want to move around at all.

I'm definitely against slow play, but this was a little different. I'm sure she wanted to finish because of the sponsor's exemption as well as not wanting to be a quitter.

Tell me about it. It was 104 degrees here in OK yesterday, and the humidity was high.

I would have suffered the same fate if I tried to walk 18, so I stayed inside.

Hooray for Jeff Grove!!!

Poor guy will probably be fined and loose his sponsors for being straight. She got exhausted hitting all those extra shots.

Hooray for Jeff Grove!!!

Urgh.

First of all, it's "Gove," not "Grove." Second of all, it's "lose," not "loose." Third of all, she was at even par through eight before she doubled #9. That's not a whole lot of extra shots on the day. Jeez. I gotta get used to the fact that people are gonna hammer this girl no matter what happens, for any reason that pops into their heads.

Ok i admit the spelling errors. Spellcheck has ruined my ability. She was 7 over for the tournement, 9 shots off the cut, pretty darn near dead last. She knew she needed the round of her life and by hole 2 she knew it wasn't happening.

All I am saying is the novelty is beginning to wear off. I think Gove's comments indicate that it is wearing off for the Tour players too. Maybe if she could win something, anything, people might stop "hammering" her.

Well, I don't think she's a "novelty" act... I think she's a legit talent that's trying to test her game. She was offered an opportunity to do it... would you turn it down?

Besides, just by her attendance, we're all talking about the John Deere Open, for crying out loud. The sponsors, the fans, even the critics -- everyone was watching. And I think Gove has every right to be upset, but I also think that a professional golfer that let's that kind of stuff distract him was probably not going to make the cut anyway. He has missed 7 of the last 9, after all. And I don't think Michelle Wie had anything to do with him missing the cut with a +11 at the Cialis Western Open last week. Quote from Joe Ogilvie, who held the lead after the second round: "If someone has a problem with Michelle Wie getting a sponsor exemption, they don't understand what we're about," Ogilvie said. "Our job is to entertain. That's why we're out here. We're playing golf, but at the same time it's entertainment. We're not curing cancer out here, we're just trying to get the ball in the hole." "It looked like Tiger Woods was teeing off on number 10," Ogilvie said of Wie's start in the opening round. "It was wall-to-wall, all the way down the entire length of the par-five, 10th hole. It was great to see. It's great for the PGA Tour, it's great for Michelle Wie and it's great for Joe Ogilvie."

I think Jeff Gove, like most tour players, are intense people trying to make a living and making the cut. I hate slow play. And if its in my living that depended on it, I would be more frustrated. Just look at Rory Sabatini when his partner and him got a penalty for slow play.
Its the "powers that be" that are creating this circus act and Michelle Wie may be a naive participant on it. Remember, she is only 16. But even though its all about the money and ratings, I dont think that her playing level belongs there as of now. I kinda wonder if BJ Wie is getting over zealous with this situation.
I dont agree with Joe Ogilvie that a tour player's job is to entertain. IT IS TO MAKE A BETTER LIVING and doing it with the game that you love to play! And right now, Jeff Gove does not find it amusing at all. But it is the sponsers that should be taking the heat, and I think the supporters are making up ridiculous arguments as far as her playing with the men.
She needs to learn how to win. Not playing just well enough to play on the weekends. She cant win in the next year or two with what she has in her game. And the Sony open was her home course anyway. That is why she did well in there.

I was a big Michelle Wie fan like a year ago maybe, but now, im tired of hearing about her all the time. She has done nothing in her career so far, I know she's 16, I know she's a girl and can hit it as far as a man, big deal. Win a tourney against woman first, get to be #1 on the LPGA first. I saw her signing autographs one day and this 10 year old boy walks up to have her sign a ball, she said "Oh, I dont sign balls" and the kid walked off with his head down. She gets all these accolaids and all these lead stories on tv, internet and hasnt won anything ever of any magnatude. Im in the minority I know but and this is only my opinion, shes a stuck up, arrogant rich kid. Thats it, I know she'll win in the future and maybe knock off Sorenstam soon but for now stay on your tour until you can beat girls. Jeff Gove was dead on and I applaud his honesty.

Ah, jeez. More of the same.

iacas, I know this is my thread, but can we go ahead and close this thing? I'm thinking people haven't bothered to read your article, and I'm really getting tired of the same comments from people, over and over and OVER again.

Blah blah blah, she hasn't won anything , blah blah blah, she's no Annika , blah blah blah, she's stuck-up , blah blah blah, win on the LPGA first , blah blah blah, two separate tours , blah freakin' blah.

Someone contribute a new argument, or let's just stop beating this dead horse.

Ah, jeez. More of the same.

There IS nothing else to contribute. She's just some kid with ability that occasionally plays with men but cant beat them yet. End of story, I just dont think she deserves all the pub she gets, again she has done nothing, stop cramming all this hoopla down our throats. Yeah someday maybe but for now, she has no buisness playing with PGA Tour pro's taking the spot of a guy who could do things when she can't even beat LPGA pro's. I understand you defending her, she's a great talent and in time she'll be money but for now, enough is enough.

Sorry, but you're flat out WRONG. How's this for starters?

A year later, she became the youngest player ever to make a cut in a LPGA event at the Kraft Nabisco Championship and shot a 66 in the 3rd round, tying the amateur record for a women's major championship, and placing her in the final group alongside Annika Sorenstam and eventual winner, Patricia Meunier-Lebouc. A few months later, Wie earned an historic victory at the Women's Amateur Public Links tournament, becoming the youngest person ever (male or female) to win a USGA event for adults.

And if she can't beat the LPGA pros, how come she's finished no worse than T5 in the last four LPGA Majors? That sure sounds like she beat, oh, 140+ or so other players in each of those tournaments. The facts are simply not on your side.

How's your golf resume look in comparison? Same old same old. Get some new arguments. Your current one boils down to "I don't like her." Thread closed at request of thread originator.

    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
    • Day 552, May 7, 2024 Played nine holes with @NatalieB with irons only from her tees. Didn't really finish out any holes, just hit the irons and approaches and some chips.
    • What has gone downhill? Have you been practicing properly, filming your swing, working on exactly what he suggested without straying? My thoughts are that your results/outcomes from a lesson a year ago probably aren't all that relevant anymore.  And carry distance is far more important than total distance. Total distance is going to vary significantly based on course conditions.
    • One thing that has helped me tremendously is to spray the club face with foot powder when I am on the range. Seeing ball impact can be quite helpful if you are hitting shots all over the place. It's not the cure all, but a good little thing to do on the range. The other thing, and I will forget to do it, is the pre-shot routine. Find me a spot a foot or so from the ball in-line with my target, take my stance, take the swing.  Sometimes you take a BS practice swing with no thought. Make it deliberate.  As far as swing thoughts. I have 3 check-points. First is set-up, Second is my take away, Third is my downswing. I cant explain what I think I just know in my mind. Its a feeling that I have that feels right and experience has shown that if I follow those 3 thoughts more than likely the outcome will be what I was looking for. Now, thinking about the feeling and executing it properly is a whole different thing, that;s why I practice, I used to be over a 20 handicap, I am down to a 15.1 in about a year.  I feel like its good progress. the goal is a 10 by the end of the year. If I make it great, if not, hey at least Im not in Gaza. LOL
    • I usually shy away from giving advice on a golf swing since so many here are more qualified than I am.  You might try the following:  Create a "MySwing" page on this  site and you will get a lot of good advice Filter all of the advice and try to only focus on one or two things at a time.  Unfortunately it is very hard, if not impossible, to constantly change different things at the same time.  Figure out what is the most important thing to work on at this moment in your golf swing and focus on that until you have it engrained, then move on the the next change. Remember, we all have both good & bad shots.  The difference between the pros and us hackers is the ratio of good to bad shots. Understand that a bad swing can occasionally look like a great result and a good swing can occasionally have a bad result.  The key is to focus on one thing and work to get that as consistent as possible.  Ideally that will gradually increase the number of good shots vs bad shots.    Do not forget to have fun.
