Sometimes I'll get into a bad funk of doing it with my 3 Wood off the deck, and its almost always because I've let the ball creep forward in my stance.

I am a new golfer and I often have the same thing happen to me even after hitting the ball great for an hour or so. I lose confidence at that point and its really hard to hit the ball well again.

I at first thought I was getting tired.

Here's a couple of links with some good videos on why you top the ball and how to stop that you might find helpful:

Videojug's a great site for golf tips and there's always something that will explain why you do something and not just how to fix it. I highly recommend it.

Everyone has great advice. I'd say it depends on what club you are playing too. With the irons, I make sure my left wrist is flat at address and move the ball back in my stance a little bit. As someone else said, don't take you eye off the ball either and drive down on it.

I'll usually start choking down on the club and taking half swings to hit it right and work my way back into form. It is a waste to spend money on a whole bucket of balls and hit them shabbily!

    • There are so many videos comparing and contrasting everything that I am both overwhelmed and more than a bit skeptical. Your comments above are much more valuable than hours of you-tube videos. Generally speaking, I’d much prefer to read something that someone took the time and trouble to write (such as your comments) than a bunch of videos, or worse, meaningless reviews that seem like they are all cut and paste selections of the same script. I’m more of a RTFM type than a watcher of “instructional” videos. By way of explanation, I don’t watch TV either.  So thanks - I’ll take that under advisement. I have an H3 that I bought for $10 that I’ve been carrying around but not sure why. Seems like a cool club, but I just don’t really know what to do with it.
    • I was using the window as a mirror. Just trying to be a more aware of the feels for a better backswing. Trying to not be as closed from A1 to A2. Then not letting the club head flip inside. What I was feeling was a pressure my right wrist, and like the palm of my right hand was pushing upward against the grip of the club. My right hand was the underside of the swing path.  Going to play around with this a bit more. It looked pretty decent with mirror/window work. Just wanted to jot it down.
