I recently have been playing a Titleist ProV1 and have been very impressed with it's spin and overall control to hold the greens. However, I'm amazed at how easily the ball's shell gets cut. My wedge literally will pull paint off the ball as if Xmen's Wolverine had swiped at it. Anyone else encounter this? My wedge is a Cleveland with Zip Grooves. It's the first time I've ever created backspin on a ball... but the ball won't last a round . I played one Prov1X for almost 4 rounds with little damage but miss the control of the ProV1.

Can anyone recommend a ball that is more durable than the ProV1 but has similar control? Thanks.

i was very happy with the control and overall durability of the nike (one black)

dont know if that helps but i was impressed. i usually get the same result as you do with the pro v's but when i used the nike it didn't seem to chip/lose paint/or flake

I switched from the PROV1x to the Callaway ix and it might be permanent. Since you use the more spinning prov1 you can try the Callaway i. They are durable, but they seem to get really dirty. With the hex dimples it just seems to pick up more grass stains, and I'm constantly washing them.

I suck, but just wanted to throw in a suggestion. I have also had luck with the Bridgestone B330, but didn't like the distance.

I tried the Bridgestone 330 RX on my last round.

That is an awesome ball. I found it to perform in many ways like a ProV1 (spun one 30 ft hard right from a greenside bunker...it was hilarious...my Dad was laughing heartily at that shot).

The durability of the ball was impressive.

Bridgestone B330-S. Best alternative that I've found to the Pro v1. It's a great ball.

Like others here I'm also in the process of permanently switching from the Pro v1 to the bridgestone b330-s.

other balls similar to the pro v (probably more durable too) are:

taylormade tp black (or red)
callaway hx tour
bridgestone 330, 330-s, 330-rx
Nike One (black or platinum)

Basically unless you're really picky and keen on ball performance, you probably won't notice the difference between most of the 3 piece balls and you may not even notice much of a difference with a cheaper, 2 piece ball.

Maxfli Blackmax. More durable than the Pro V1 and cant tell the difference in spin. I can hit it as long and and get it to stop dead off a 5 iron and get it to draw back 10-12 feet from a 9I-60*wedge.

I played 1 ball for 3 rounds. It was dirty looking but was not scuffed or shredded.

HX Tour. Its callaways last year model, and they are usually on sell because of that. Its a great ball, super long and good spin.

Strangely enough, I have the opposite issue. The PROv1 is much more durable for me than the PRov1x or the TP red. I think its honestly the best ball out.

Aside from marketing propaganda, its evident the formula changed drastically with the X. The X feels much harder to me and although it doesnt spin off the driver much it spins like crazy on wedge approaches, more than the prov1 or TP red which is contrary to many.

I would play the prov1, but I play the tips at every course and I'm honestly just not that long of a hitter.. that being said the prov1 is just so much shorter off the tee with more spin and I lose too many yards that I need for my approach shots, so I play the TP reds. I cannot tell you why Prov1's are more durable for me, like I said, if they were longer, they would be the most perfect ball Ive ever hit. I played Prov1 since 2001 so I dont have much experience with many other balls other than TP Reds.

Good luck

Dont worry - same happend to me when i got new Cleveland wedges - couple of weeks in play and you wont have this problem any more, unless you change your wedges every 2 weeks or so.

    • I watched this video of his last night: I don't hate him like @boogielicious apparently does and thought this was a pretty good premise so I gave it a shot.  Not the worst thing in the world and I especially liked the premise.  He's got a lot of air to fill by himself, which he isn't great at, but in doing so, you get some decent insight into how his brain works while setting up shots/putts.
    • So driver is longer than all the other clubs and gear effect plays a bigger part with driver than anything else. If you're hitting it out of the heel it could slice even if you have the face square. Could try some foot spray or impact tape and check that. Other thing is if the shaft is different in how it flexes or how flexible it is it could be affecting your swing somewhat. Driver also has the straightest face, so while with a 4 iron it might fade, with driver that can wind up being a slice with the same face angle at impact.
    • Yeah I have taken lessons. I also got clubs fitted in like 2011 ish. My driver and wedges aren't from that set though.    1. I'm just not sure why I can't seem to get the face back to square. I don't have that problem with my other clubs. Sure the longer ones a miss tends to be a slice, but I don't need to make a grip change to only sometimes hit the ball reasonably straight.   2. I think there is a bit of inaccuracy there. The number I have in my head is like 195 for my 5 iron. 4 iron also definitely has more variance than all my other irons, but 210ish is about right for non mishits.
    • Only if they call you Poindexter!
    • For multiple reasons, including "why should anyone else care to continue to search for someone else's ball?" No thanks.
