I play with a 1999 set of Mizuno Comp-ez's. I love them and irons are the best part of my game, but I would think I could benefit by getting a new set. I'm sort of in between and need some advice.

Based on the bolded part, I vote NO.

If you have a set of irons that you really like, then I say no. Iron technology is far different than, say, drivers, which have changed A LOT since '99. Irons have a little, of course, but not nearly as much as the woods in golf. My Uncle plays irons he got in 1988...And he plays to about a 4 handicap, and he's a very good player. He has considered changing but in the end he just is too good with these and to consistent. I read in Johnny Miller's book not to get new irons if you really love your set and are a good iron player with them...because irons can be a real big feel difference once you've been used to something for a while. It'd be different if they were like 20 years old, but only 10 isn't too long with irons.

Wait till you can't hit them anymore.
But then again, I bet next time you hit the course you will feel you can't hit them anymore, and you might actually hit them bad, it's all about psychology.

If you're feeling like you need something fresh just go for it. Don't keep yourself wanting something money can buy.
My achievements:
Eagles: 0
Birdies: 18
Best Round: 89

You could have $1100 irons or $400, if you hit the $1100 ones like crap and the $400 well theres no reason to get more expensive ones.. Golf is all about preference what ever you do well with is the best club.. not the most expensive

Agree and disagree...depends on the type of iron...players irons are more or less the same in my opinion. manufacturing advances and new materials have made some differences, but not a whole lot. For the typical mid handicapper, however, a lot of advances have been made in iron technology. With the advent of computers, companies now can put weight exactly where they want it in a club so that it is both forgiving and workable at the same time. We are seeing nice deep cavities with perimeter weighting on clubs that look at address like they should be players irons...pretty remarkable. i'd say a new a set of irons could get the OP 10-15 yards and more control.

That said, you are still right, if you love your irons, don't replace them until the heads break.

If it makes any difference I'm looking at players irons, and I think the comp ez's are game improvement.

If you hit your irons really good right now and it's a strength of your game, I just see no reason to change to be honest. No need to have players irons at a 15 handicap. Wait a year or so and see where your game is at.

Once again, just my opinion.

IMO, actually getting fitted for your irons makes the biggest difference, not necessarily how new they are. I am 6'1" tall, and needed clubs that are 1/2" long and 2* upright. Hitting the clubs made for me made all the difference in the world in my game. I would buy a new set ONLY if your Mizunos don't FIT you...

Yeah that's another thing. im 6'3" and playing with standard length irons. However I saw Stewart Cink is 6'4" and plays with standard length clubs.

    • I'll try to post a bit more here as the season moves on.  Yesterday was my first "referee gig" this year, the first of a two-day event for juniors.  No real unusual rulings, but a couple of slightly complicated situations with two consecutive drops.  There's a hole with a Red Penalty Area down the right, with a cart path running parallel.  On a couple of occasions a player had to take Penalty Area relief.  Two clublengths from the point of entry required dropping no further left than the center of the cart path.   Once that relief procedure was completed, he took relief from the cart path.  Due to the relatively small distance between the path and the PA, the Nearest Point of Complete Relief was to the "fairway side" of the path.  I made the Player consider a drop to the PA side, with the player's feet clear of the path (i.e. complete relief from interference), but that would have put the drop in the Penalty Area, which isn't acceptable. Something which I now see as common, this 36-hole event is defined as four 9-hole stipulated rounds.  This is done so that, if bad weather sets in, there can be legitimate results if everyone has completed at least 9 holes.
