Hey guys, probably gonna go out for my first ever 18 holes today. I normally just play 9 and am wondering if anyone has any tips. I think I need some tips on focusing as I sometimes lose focus on 9, let alone 18... And I'd like to break 100. Haha sooooooo any tips?

Thanks,
Macmike

If you're already playing 9 holes, 18 isn't much different. Make sure you have plenty of water and snacks (bananas are the best) to keep yourself in good condition for the whole round.

Don't try to fix your swing on the course and hit your tee shot on the first with your favourite club, even if that's a 7 iron. Good luck!

I think more people suffer from 'front v. back 9' than like to admit. My best advice - not just for this occasion, but for your game, in general - is, learn to treat EACH SHOT as its own opportunity. Obviously, each hole is a fresh start, a chance to put it on a tee, but just b/c you may be under a tree sometimes, doesn't mean you can't make the RIGHT plan and execute the RIGHT shot for that situation (just like being dead in the middle of the fairway doesn't mean you can't do everything wrong at that point, LOL).

Once you adopt this, I think you'll find that there is no longer some 'magic velvet rope' that you cross when you make the turn. Aside from being exactly 50% finished, 50% remaining, there is no reason for your mindset to hiccup at the turn. Good luck!

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

Actually I find it a lot better to focus on 18 than 9.. 9 i kinda just goof off but 18 im very serious phone is on silent grab something tiny to eat and a gatorade after 9 go potty.. and just play my best.. i always do better on the back 9 as well

break it down to two 9 hole rounds back to back and you will be fine. make sure you snack on the back nine and drink enough fluids. you may lose some focus near the end of the round so relax and try not to swing faster and harder......... and have fun.

I think that's the worst advice, with all due respect. It seems that will only lead to his thinking, "ok, I finished the first nine, what I usually play, now comes the 'unusual' part.' Take one shot at a time, one hole at a time. If there's another hole to be played, play it. I think the ideal result is for him to LOSE track of the holes with focus on individual shots.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

    • Yeah I really want to avoid the rabbit hole if I can  🤣 I'm not sure I'm going to make my lesson Tuesday though, whatever I did to the back of my hand at the range is getting worse, but that's a whole separate issue 🤣
    • Rory becomes the second person after Tiger to pass $100 million in earnings on the PGA Tour. Earnings always favor recency since purses go up. Scottie's first win was in 2022, but he's already at $75 million with "only" 18 professional wins. Rory McIlroy $100 million career earnings PGA Tour, joins Tiger Woods Until Sunday, Tiger Woods was the only golfer in the history of the PGA Tour to surpass $100 million in career earnings. Now he has company.
    • Can't tell 100% from your videos but if your right hand is too far underneath the grip the tendency for most folks is to roll it close through impact little too early. Try putting your right (trail) hand more on the side of the grip instead of underneath at address for a simple enough adjustment. This might help. In general match-ups matter greatly and you might have to make corresponding changes. I wouldn't even begin to suggest whatever those might be. Best to get a good pro to help. Self-diagnosis/experimentation can work for some but for most it's a rabbit hole.
    • Been away for a few weeks. A bit of tumultuous times at work. We had about 4% our exempt workforce laid off. My project from hell won’t let up. Just been burnt out the past couple of weeks and the cold crappy weather. Back at it now. Backswing drill - working on swing path feels. Right wrist bent, more feeling the palm facing away from me. Feeling the hands stay in front of me more.  Downswing- Feel like I make a big long arc with the butt end of the club to my right pocket. More out away from my shoulder. Combining this with recentering for timing. When I make a 60% swing, the clubhead feels like it’s arching from the inside and lower way more.
    • Its tough, "greatest" is subjective, measured in many different ways, while goals and assists are simple numbers.  And even simple numbers aren't always directly comparable across eras, as you mention.  A truly amazing coincidence, if Ovi scores 2 goals in the next 2 games, he'll have exactly the same number as Gretzky (894), in exactly the same number of games (1487).
