I'm quite pleased, recently started playing and practicing alot (about 5 months ago) and have went from a 13 to 7 (well... almost) in 4 months. Fired off a 76 last time out. I played to a 12 back in high school (10 years ago).

At any rate, for those near scratch or better... how long did it take you to progress from, say, a 5 to scratch? I know everyone's different, but just curious as to where some of you fell.

took me a year and a half from beginning to get to a 5 then a year from 5 to 3.9.

Wedge Player, damn! I've been playing for a year and a half and I barely manage my 10 handicap. And for scratch, depends on motivation and talent I suppose, but if you started around 16 it should be doable in 3-4 years of consistent playing and lessons.

It took me about 2 years to get from a 5 to a 3.5 and about a 1 and a half years to get from a 3.5 to a 2. I'm not sure that I will ever see scratch because I don't believe I have the time to put in to get there. I would say if you're a 7 and have the time you could get down around scratch in 3 years. Theres 2 scratch golfers at my club and both of them are really good. When I'm in their group I notice that the biggest thing is their ball striking and short game. Picture it like this if a scratch has 7i or less into a green they will probably be inside 15 feet if its mishit 20 feet. My mishits are more 25 to 30 feet and thats all it takes to keep me from getting there.

That is great. Congrats. I played with a very good player on Friday. The difference I noticed was his iron game and short game. I took 3 to get down where it only took him two. I got my handicap to a 7.8 before and it has went up to a 11.2 then back down to a 10.8.

I think if you can shoot in the 70s consistantly you will be a 5 in no time. That is pretty good golf.

Sounds like my goals. I started taking golf 3 years ago. I was shooting in the mid 120's 3 years ago, now I have had two rounds in the 70's this year, and now pretty solidly into single digit handicap wise. My goal is to get to scratch by the end of next summer. It's going to be very very hard, but I guess I set my goals high.

I started playing last July and started taking the game seriously around January of this year. I think I was a 24 when I bought my G10 irons right after New Years...now that I'm where I'm at, the strokes aren't flying off anymore and I'm having to pick apart my swing. I'm also looking to upgrade my irons since the distance control I need just isn't there and I feel like I'm chipping with a shovel sometimes. I'm currently drooling over some Mizunos. Anyone want to buy some G10 irons?
