i actually just posted this story in the "best bounce" thread, but i figured it was worth re-telling in its own thread.

several weeks ago, i was playing the local course, and the fourth hole is a 295 yard par 4. the fairway shape is a very slight reverse C. if you can hit a shot directly over the left edge of the fairway over a group of trees, and hit that shot with a slight fade on it, you've got pretty good odds of the ball rolling onto or really close to the green.

i walked up to the box feeling pretty good, as i had scored par birdie bogey for the first three holes, and aimed my drive straight at the shortcut over the trees. i got the line, but i didn't get the ball high enough, and it caught in the top part of the trees. as fate would have it, though, the ball bounced off a branch in such a way that it actually was thrown forward and slightly right, directly down towards the green, leaving me with about a 30 yard chip. lucky me.

well... on my chip shot, i totally flubbed it. i hit behind the ball and felt the face close right up on me. the ball started well left of the flag - barely even aiming for the green at all - when it must've hit a rock or something and took a bounce forward and right and rolled right into the cup for an eagle. a bad drive, an even worse chip, and i get an eagle out of the deal. i looked around, shrugged, and just thought to myself "well. that's golf."

This happened to me today on a par 5. My friend said that we were going to have a contest of who could hit the ball closer to the center line. I hit a low weak shot down the left side of the fairway. He bombs his drive and when we get up to his ball it was on the center line. I then proceed to top my 3 wood while he hits 3 wood up by the green in the fairway. For my third shot I hit a 5 iron which hits a dirt spot and rolls to about 20 feet from the pin. My friend hits a some what poor pitch to 15 feet. I make my putt for birdie, he misses and taps in for par.

well, thats golf.

on the 1st hole a par 5 i hit a pretty weak drive to the middle of the fairway, lands right behind a tree, a little right of it in the fairway.. decide to hit my 5 wood and try to draw it around the tree.. well it goes straight into the tree, hits a hard branch, drops right below the tree.. hit 5 wood again from there, complete slice that lands in the rough right side of the fairway.. was thinking this is going to be a rough day.. next shot from 50 yds out uphill, all i can see is the top of the flag. hit a good shot, walk to the green, no ball.. figured it went over, last place i checked was the hole and sure enough there it was.. ugliest birdie ever, but ill take it

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
