My son and I have been playing golf just over three months. My son played his first 18 holes today. He is 11 years old and uses a $60 set of clubs. I was just wondering if hitting 116 is good for the first time going 18. He usually hits in the low 50's for nine. I am hoping that in 3 years he can make a high school team. I know a lot of people are excited about breaking 100 so I was wondering if this was good.

I'd say that is a good first 18.
Which tees were you all playing from?

Until you all both consistently break 100, I'd hit from the forward tees.

I think if you couple the natural learning ability with kids that age with just a few lessons, he will be better than most adults by the time he hits 14.

He played from the whites, the course is 6334 yards.

I remember when my littler brother was that age, he would refuse to play from the reds because it's for "women." That's a good first round. More important than score at this point is to get him a good foundation.

My brother is not much older (as am I ) and he's developed into a pretty good golfer.

116 IMO is a very good score. When I first started in my late-20's I routinely shot in the 120's-130's.

That's good for the first 18. I wouldn't reccomend playing from the reds like someone said. Just keep working at your game from the whites. That way you don't have to make another leap once you get consistent from the reds. Just make sure not to play from the blues so the game doesn't become a nightmare for you. I always play from white no matter what.

I think he's talking about his son not his self.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

Thats a top class score,i think my first round was like a 146.

I couldn't agree more. When you are starting out golf, the best possible thing you can do is take lessons. I was best at golf when I was 13-14 because I was instantly pointed in the right direction on how to do everything when I started at age 10. Anything an instructor tells you to do when you are that young gets absorbed and sticks with you. After taking a 6-8 year complete break from golf and then returning(other sports took priority in HS and college), I am still comfortable with my swing/approach thanks to my instructors I had when I was just starting out.

Yes, he will be fine. I was shooting in the 100's at age 14 and I made my varsity golf team all four years in H.S. Appeared in a match as a freshman as well.

He will be past 100's if he is given the proper instruction and sticks with the game by the time high school rolls around.

    • Day 121: did a bit of mirror work with my driver. Working on shortening the backswing.
    • Day 305 - Grip and backswing work. Full swings were bothering the hip a bit.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-15 Light day. Lots of catch-up work. Checked the grip to make sure I wasn't compensating there, and did a little backswing work.
    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
