Golf Trip in Texas?

My buddies and I are planning our first annual golf trip. We are going to try to go somewhere different each time. We live in the DFW area of Texas and wanted to stay somewhere close.

We were thinking Austin, San Antonio, etc.. Anyone down south and know of any good places? We are planning for sometime in Sept/Oct when its cooler. Go down and play for 3 straight days!

Of those three, the links at lands end is the best value. Lake Fork also has world class bass fishing

A little further away, I'd go for Horseshoe Bay in Marble Falls http://www.hsbresort.com/

Horseshoe Bay resort is nice. It's near Austin, so there's stuff to do at night and the golf courses are some of the best in the state.

What are you looking for in a course? I've been to most of the locals, and even the municipals enjoy a pretty broad range of cost and quality.

twin lakes in canton is a dream

there are many courses in and around conroe that are really good,you may want to look into it

Newport Dunes in Port Aransas is fantastic. It is a new Arnold Palmer course that opened last October. You can hear the waves crashing from every hole on the course. It is a challenging links style course with incredible scenery, tough golf, and great location. There aren't too many other good courses in the Corpus Christi area, but you can run over to Rockport and play there, but it will not be as nice as Newport Dunes.

There are plenty of places to play in the Austin area:

Grey Rock
Falconhead
Barton Creek has 3 courses.
Shadow Glen (tough)
Avery Ranch
Spanish Oaks (if you know someone who can get you on)
Twin Creeks

I've played all of the above except the Barton Creek courses and they are all great.

There are plenty of places in the San Antonio area:
La Cantera Resort Course
La Cantera Palmer Course
The Quarry
Bandit (in New Braunfels)

all of those are cool golf courses as well.

I dont get around too far from home... I would say my home course is Mansfield National. I like Tierra Verde too

I can't believe noone suggested Star Ranch in Hutto. It isn't in Austin city limits, but it is right outside of it. Definitely one of the best public courses in Texas.

Yeah I live in College Station and have been looking into playing Blaketree. Don't they advertise it as one of the top 25 hardest courses in the US?

Also, terrible news that Waterwood is closed.

Pine Dunes in Frankston is a really nice course... Barton Creek is very, very nice but expensive... hadn't heard about Waterwood National, that's a shame, played it several times in college... tough but fun course

Links at lands end is really nice. Twin Lakes south of Canton is absolutely beautiful, and is an awesome course. Oak Hurst in Tyler is really nice as well. You could stay in Canton, miss first monday weekend, or hotel rates will be outstanding. Theres a lot of good courses around Tyler, and Garden Valley in Van is very nice as well. Van Zandt country club is nice, and its open to public. Theres also another course around Lake Fork that is nice as well. All of these will be around $30-$45 for a round, including cart. I recommend Twin Lakes alot though, they also got GPS on carts. And Pine Dunes will only be about 1.5 hours at most from Canton, or around 45 from Tyler.

We have 12 of us heading down to Horseshoe Bay to play five rounds Thursday, Friday, & Saturday. Playing Ramrock and Applerock. Not staying at the resort; nearby La Quinta was much more affordable. I'll report back next week. On previous trips we have been to Hot Springs Village, Ark, Tyler, TX and last year to the Wichita/Newton, KS area.

nice seeing my home course getting some mention. They have some cabins and do stay and play deals I believe, about 1.5-2 hour drive from the metroplex depending what part you are coming from and traffic.
