I play in a fair number of tournaments every year. I also play every year in the club championship... while a lot of my friends don't play because they can't win. My point... simply play more tournament golf. Too often players lock themselves into a set tee time with a set foursome.
I also play a lot of vacation golf with strangers. I often describe my game as "Good enough not to embarass myself, yet weak enough not to embarass the other players."
My second tip would be to encourage your tournament to have a "Skins Game". Have each player throw in $5 and let the fun begin. Having the Skins Game during the tournament means the very next hole IS a chance to win. It really does encourage you to forget your horrible holes and start fresh on the next hole. Surprisingly you will find it also will help your scoring!

Try reading Bob Rotella's books. It might help you to get that perfect state of mind. And get some hard, cheap balls. Like top-flite's or something. Definately read the books, though.
