Ok well only a month ago i shot a 80 and placed 3rd in my towns jr championship then followed that up with breaking 80 3 times in a row for the first time. now that high school golf season has started during tryouts i went 92 then followed that up by a 90 then a 95. then today i shot a 100 for the first time in forever. What do you think is the matter with me? am i playing to much golf? i have played everyday since july 7th with only 4 days off. Or do you think that that the nerves of trying out and the first match could add all those strokes?

Damn, Lol. I haven't seen triple digits in forever but I'm like the same handicap as you...the nerves can give you bad rounds for sure though...

I also play for my school team and in tournaments and stuff and I've shot some high scores (last season at a conference tournament a 95...OUCH) but just relax and play confidently. Don't try to "steer" the ball when you hit it..sometimes I do this in tournaments and it's usually a recipe for disaster.

as far as playing too much I doubt it. I play everyday, four days off since June 1st...

Don't sweat it. Same thing happened to me when I tried out for my high school team many, many years ago.

I was shooting in the low to mid 80s at the time, but decided to practice and play constantly to "make sure" I'd make the team. All I succeeded in doing was ruining my swing and putting too much pressure on myself. I shot about 100 at the first tryout. I would have been cut right then and there if it wasn't for the intervention of a couple of players who were familar with my normal game. It was suggested that I calm down, take a break and not pick up a club until the next tryout. I shot under 85 that day, made the team and never looked back. I wouldn't panic, you just need a break to clear your mind. Good luck to you!

Ya today was my first 100 for probably 2 or 3 years

yaa my problem has been putting and i have been very short off of the tee but my iron play has still been great and my chipping has been pretty good to. today i hit 7 GIR on the front nine and had exactly 0 pars!!

Wow, I've never hit 7 GIR for nine holes...ever...If I did, I'd imagine I'd shoot around even or only 1 or 2 over.

Certainly work on putting. 6 feet and in mostly. Gotta get that confidence up. Look at this way...you'll never putt that badly again in your life, so don't worry about it...think of it is a fluke (because if your an 8 handicap and hit 7 gir and still didn't make a par, it really is a fluke)... i also suggest reading golf is not a game of perfect. it's a good book for something like this.

I can't believe at your age you spend that much time at the golf course. I was about a 6 to 7 handicap at that age and I could have never gave it that amount of time. I probably played 3 or 4 days a week but I also partied, went on trips, and hung out with my friends. I would say that you might be over doing it a little but if you are into your golf season it's kind of late to back it down. The problem with golf is if one thing start going wrong it just doesn't want to go away sometimes.

sounds like pure nerves to me. You know exactly what you are capable of shooting. The hard part is playing to your best in uncomfortable (new) situations. I go through that when I play in tournaments vs. regular rounds. Its most notable in putting.. frayed nerves and putting is like oil and water.

Like many of us, been there and done that,,,lol!

out_in_30 is dead on! It does sound like nothing but nerves and it's something you have to learn to play through. I'm 43 years old now and when I tee it up in tournaments on the first hole I still get that little churning in my stomach just like I had when I was 14 and trying to make my Highschool team. The difference is I expect it now and even welcome it because I know it's time to focus and play golf. You have to learn to control your nerves and not let them control you or your swing. Have confidence in yourself and your abilities. If you have been shooting in the 70's then you obviously have refined your game and have the tools to play great golf! Like you, I also struggled early in my Highschool golf career after I had played great all summer long. Once I learned to except the pressure I was able to get out of my own way and play like I knew I could! The more you go out there and try to impress others and the coach, the more pressure you will put on yourself. Be patient and play your own game! Good Luck!

To become a consistent player you have to ask yourself what is my weakness in my golf game?

1) Putting?
How many putts per round in my last five eighteen hole rounds.

2) up and downs?
how often can I get up and down and one putt per round?

98% of the time its your short game.

A lot of people have memberships at clubs. I know a nice one by me has a good deal. $1200.00 for all the range and golf you want on 2 18 hole courses for the entire year. If you golf everyday it's more than a bargain.

Ah. That had not occurred to me. I forget that people have memberships to clubs. I don't have one, so it's easy for me to forget.

Well, first of all.

I am not talking about JUST on the Golf Course. I am talking about practicing OR playing. I play probably twice per week. But I do have a DRIVING RANGE memebership which gives me unlimited golf balls, so I was more referring to that as oppose to playing on the course, sorry for the confusion.

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
