So... you say you play off single figures.

It's not like I have never hit perfect iron shots before, just never hit it so perfect that I heard the wizz of the ball as it comes off the face.

Now that is worthy of a thread. And seeing this thread go 5 pages now, it seems to be a interesting topic.

Look at my location, I'm a "mile-high" here in Denver. So that equates to about 135yds at sea level.

I was in Fort Collins about a month ago and I was wondering why I was hitting so much further. Then I got back home to Orlando and i was wondering why I wasn't hitting as far then realized it was the altitude. Needless to say i was so pissed afterwards!

lol ya thin air up here is great!

It's funny when (well before Tiger took our tournament away) we had the International PGA Event (you know the one with the stableford scoring), when the pro's would come here with their calculators trying to figure out ther distances! btw, we can drink less alcohol than you sea level'ers for the same effect because of the thin air.

Hitting a perfect 9 iron for the first time in your life? Single figures? Yeah.. right. We're talking a bout a 9 iron.

I read this thread before going to the range tonight to see if I could hear it. Sure enough it was there. It really helped that it was only my dad and me on the range without a breath of wind. I think that if there is any noise at all (wind, other players, etc.) you wouldn't hear it. It's pretty cool to hear when it's there though.

It's the sound that makes you all warm and fuzzy inside. I think of aerial fireworks going off when I hear it, which makes me think of our short summer up here

Never heard that sound either, I know I've gotten some pretty substantial spin w/ pw and 9 iron, can usually get those both to back up on a green. I've had other say they can hear my shot whizz while over them if they are in front of me. I just cant imagine you can hear that hitting away from you, wish I could though, would be neat.

You can definitely hear hitting away from you. I think you are correct in saying that other people told you about the sound. I hear that more than I hear the sound myself. But I do hear it...and you know that when you hear it, it's going to be a good one!!

I've hit some good shots but don't know if it makes that sound or not. I think maybe because I'm focusing on the ball in the air maybe?

But it is definately easier to hear when your in front of the player hitting.

I always was wondering about that, why i couldnt really hear that sound - my buddies can hear it, i can hear it on my buddies shots, but almost never on my own, despite playing on a really silent course.

But i have to disagree with the poster above - if the ball makes that sound, doesnt necessarily mean its a perfect hit. I remember one particular shot one year ago, where i was going for a Par 5 with a 3w and it felt like a pretty solid struck shot, and one of my playing partners turned around and said - "wow that sounded awesome" - well, the ball ended up spinning and climbing into the wind really hard and dropping into the pond at 160m - which was a total suprise to me...

Obviously you can still hit bad shots and hear the sound. The only thing making the sound is the spin. I didn't mean that "every" time you hear it, it will be perfect. Come on man...
