Over the weekend at my home course a minor or minors decided to drive four-wheelers on three of the greens, doing a fair amount of damage. The grounds crew has done their best since to fill the ruts in with sand and make the greens playable, but with six or so weeks left of good golf weather remaining this is a serious blow to our little course, not to mention a personal affront to so many of us who treat the place like home.

Has anyone ever had any similar experiences at their courses, and if so what recourse, legal or otherwise, did you have in such a situation? Any ideas on how to compensated most efficiently for the damage, or to keep incidents like this from occurring in the future?

Obviously I am quite angry about it and if I were to meet the perpetrator face to face I would have to restrain myself from physically assaulting him. I know I'm not the only one that feels this way, bus as I said earlier, what's important now is to repair the greens and be sure it doesn't happen again.

Seen it happen a lot unfortunately. There was a course on the way to school where I grew up that constantly had problems with it. Place I played this weekend had some vandalism on one green. They were offering $1000 reward for information.

Best one I've heard was a kid decided to drive all over the green and got stuck. He ended up having to call a wrecker which was joined by the police. He was arrested. It cost $1000 of dollars to fix.

At congress lake country club nearby. people drove trucks on the greens and did donuts around the 4th of July. I haven't heard of anything since about it.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

yup... ive heard stories about ppl 4x4ing on the greens at the course i work at...
also some jackhole stole a monster truck and decided to test how deep some of the water hazards were and got stuck...
more than a few golfcart stories of guys tipping over... stealing them and taking them on the street... them being in lakes...
proshops been cleaned out a few times...
i think because this is a nicer course with no housing anywhere near it... its tough to catch anyone doing anything unless there was night security

There has been a rash of golf carts stolen from golf courses near me.

At one of the courses I frequently play they kept losing the flag sticks at night. They've since been taking them in each night which seems like a logical thing to do.

A week ago I stopped at a yard sale en route to the course about a half mile away that had a huge sign advertising Callaway golf balls. Interestingly, the people were selling the flag sticks as oversees golf memorabilia.

Morons.

A year or two ago people drove 4 wheelers on like 5 of the back 9 holes at my local course. You can still see them because there is a different grass where the ruts were. They also mess up putts too.

One course I play at has had diesel poured all over the greens to spell out certain words and draw somewhat phallic images. The area is notorious for "boy racers" because it's a bit out of the way and there's not many houses around there but the police have cracked down lately so there haven't been any more issues.

I have seen 4x4 damaged greens a few times in the past. People are such idiots.

Best Solution... small thin piece of fishing line or wire stretched about 4 feet in the air at various points in the course... then take it down during the day. Should effectively decapitate or seriously injure anyone acting like an asswad. Just make sure to tell the police that some annonymous member must have put up such wires... that way you avoid any legal entanglements.

No vandalism to the course, but once at a local nine hole course near me. Some high school kids were going out late at night, around 1 or 2 AM, and breaking into the cart barn and driving the carts all over the course. They were smashing them purposely into trees. They broke about 5 or 6 of the golf carts, no damage done to the course, though.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
