I know your probably tired of threads where people ask which clubs set to get but too bad, here's another one...lol j/k

I've been using the same set of clubs since I was 13 (I'm 22 now). The funny thing is that I'm almost the same height I was then which is 6'3". I've been playing ALOT of golf this summer and have taken 4 lessons along with alot of practice. I've really improved my putting and chipping this summer but my iron game has suffered and I want to ask you guys what you think I should do.

My curent golf set is:

Ram Tour Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood. The driver also has 2 huge dents in the top of it and I have no clue what the degree of it is....lol

3-P Top Flight Tour Cavity Backs with grips that have all split at the bottom.

52* 20 dollar wedge from Dunhams

60* Pure Spin wedge that I probably over-use (Phil's my hero)

Oddesy White Hot Putter

I've done alot of research on what clubs I want to get and have limited it down to Mp-60's, 690MB's, and 695MB's. Even though I've never hit these clubs, I dont have a chance to demo many clubs since I'm a lefty. I picked these clubs because they are older models which I hopefully can get cheaply on ebay. I know the Titleists are players irons/blades but I want to learn how to hit them as stupid as that sounds...lol.

I'm happy with my wedges and putter but really need some new irons and eventually a driver.

There's not really any local places to get fitted for clubs near me. I'm wondering if I get a new set of irons should I get standard length (current iron length) or since I'm tall should I get +1/2" or even +1"? My current grips also feel small because my left hand thumb moves during my swing, which I'm assuming is because the grips are too small?

I was on a launch monitor testing out drivers a couple months ago and my swing speed averaged at 119 mph. I dont know how to compares to my iron swing but I'm assuming I still need stiff shafts in my irons?

I know its probably hard to fit someone for clubs without even seeing them but I really can't drive an hour plus to get fitted. I go to school Mon-Friday and work Friday-Sunday.

I know I'm kind of rambling on with different thoughts but I really dont have anyone else to ask...lol

Thanks

You are asking questions that should be asked of the person fitting you for your clubs, without seeing your swing, knowing your measurements, etc. no one can tell you what shaft is appropriate or what length to get and I wouldn't go by one launch monitor's swing speed.

Sooner or later you'll have 3 or 4 hours that you can drive somewhere, hit some actual clubs (hopefully outside) and get fit. If you are not willing to invest the time and effort, I would recommend not getting new clubs. Make the time. Make a mistake on your self-fitting and on your choice of clubs/shafts and you'll end up compensating for that in your swing and only bad things will happen from there. Make the time.

Re: your irons, I know there are a lot of guys who swear by Top Flite Tours, maybe you should try getting them regripped? You can also lengthen them at the same time pretty cheaply.

I would wait to get fitted I feel your pain as a lefty but with your height and swing speed it will pay off. Plus you are picking out irons that will be a little more difficult to hit and you may not like the feel so getting to demo would benefit you greatly.

I still don't understand why people buy iron's because they want to "learn how to hit blades" just buy whatever irons suit your game.

You should start a thread about that. Seriously though, those are exactly what I'd recommend to someone I'd never seen swing. I actually wouldn't recommend anything for certain, but when people recommend GI of any kind, they're assuming their swing has some flaws that need correcting - blade (or blade type) irons typically don't pretend to correct anything - that's up to the player. I like your suggestion of using what works - regardless of type.

As tall as you are, make sure the irons are the right length and lie angle.

If the clubs are a serious misfit for the adult you, they could cause you to injure your back over the long term.

Case in point is Cary Middlecoff , a Tennessee dentist who played the pro tour successfully back in the 1950s. He stood 6-foot-2... tall for a pro in those days... and hit the ball a mile off the tee. He retired from the tour in 1961 at age 40, bothered by a perpetual sore back from having to play with too short "one-size-fits-all" clubs of the era.

So, keep your long-term back health in mind. Go get fitted for a set.

I live in Mt.Pleasant! :)

There is a Golf Galaxy in Grand Rapids that you could get fitted at. The best place would be Miles of Golf in Ypsilanti. Both places are easily just a day trip or less from Mt. Pleasant. There may be a place over in the Saginaw / Bay City / Flint area too.
