A lot of us moan about our scores, spend lots of $$$ on new equipment, or time at the practice range, and golf instruction videos and books. etc. all hoping for a better score. I was wondering, how much you all spend on lessons, range balls, or if some of you have taken to the high tech road and purchased a system to help analyze your golf swing with the help of a video camera, computer and software. If anyone has done this I would love to know what you purchased and how good it worked???

For home analysis I use a Canon Powershot A590 that can take low-resolution movies (320 * 240 at 30fps). The camera cost only $150. Then I use trial analysis software (for free) to review my swing using plane lines. The software is called V1 Home ver 2.0.

The setup works well, but one complaint is my USB connection to my PC, which is a little slow (only USB ver 1.0). I think most current computers have USB 2.0 which is a little faster.

Another problem is the movie files generated from the camera are fairly large size, about 21MB for only a 30 second clip. When I convert the movies locally I can get them much smaller, so the video codec the camera uses is not very efficient.

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)

I use a Sony DCR-HC38. I get 60 fps on the sports mode. If you have good lighting it works really well. I've got over two years of video now. I also use V1. Of all the lessons I've taken, this was one of the best investments.

BTW, my files are usually only 10 MB for a single swing.

I do this as well. I have a small, bendable leg tripod that I hook onto my golf bag at the range and I take video using my Canon Powershot SD550 point-and-shoot camera that takes video as well. I use the same software but the key is knowing how to use it. I've had instruction and am well versed in what lines to draw and what to look for. It's a big help. I don't use it very often but if I'm just not hitting it solid or I can't seem to solve a problem, I go to the video. It's been a major help.

I use a homemade dual trace swing trainer to visualize my clubhead path and face angle through the impact zone. It is two LEDs (one red, one green) that are mounted to a driver, as you swing it in low light you can see the traces from the LEDs, and from that tell what your clubhead path and face angle are. Cost is less than $10, something similar that was sold by Freddy Connects was about $125.

I have a slight disability and a somewhat unconventional swing, so I don't overanalyze my mechanics other than finding what works best for me.

Wow that's a great idea!!!!!!

Where do you actually mount the LEDs? I assume you hook a battery up to this?

That is a smokin' deal on the SKLZ trainer. I hadn't seen that one before, but it is pretty much identical to the Freddy Connect. Mine is somewhat different, mine is built on a piece of plexiglass that I mount to the top of a driver with a sculpted piece of rigid foam and duck tape. It doesn't have the same ability to mount to any club, but it is very light. The Freddy Connect model weighed about 2 oz. The LEDs on mine are also spaced farther apart, which I think makes it a bit more sensitive/precise.

In addition to the two LEDs mine has a resistor and a calculator battery. That's it. I don't bother with a switch, I just pop the battery out of its holder.

I was going to buy a photo camera, so I got one which shoot 300, 600, 1200 FPS at the same time. I use the 300 FPS setting for recording my swing. Very useful.

When working on swing plane I swing a club outside the house with the image mirroring in a window. After some practice I record it and see how I did. I also have friends and playing partners watch while swinging.
