My last 18 holes out, I shot a 108, which was bad, even by my standards. I'm dedicated to improving my game after getting back into it, so I've been keeping track of my individual stats a lot more lately in an effort to work on what's costing me the most strokes.

What was really surprising to me, since this is the first time I've kept track of things is that I hit a lot of fairways for my skill level, I tracked 9 out of 14 drives were in the fairway.

What was disturbing to me was my number of putts for the round, which was 54 So I figure I can lower my score the most by working on my skills on and around the green. Getting pitches and chips closer to the pin on approach, and not 3 putting every hole would show a vast improvement.

So, would getting a decent indoor practice green to put in my office help me out? Or do I just need to man up and get out to the practice green more often and practice on real grass? I built a practice chip/pitch area at the house today, measured out in 5 yard increments to 75 yards, and started working on that part, just need to work on my horrible putting.

Thanks for any advice.

Hey man, the putting green would help out allot! What I would suggest is my favorite putting drill that makes your stroke more consistent and gives you loads of confidence, which is really everything to putting well. And it is fun!

put your putter head in the hole, using the putter as a measuring stick. Place a coin at the end of the grip. Now put in four golf balls in a row, if you make four in a row move the mark back one putter grip (about 12 inches). Believe me, this is one of the most popular putting drills among my pro and college golf friends. Try it out!

I completely agree. I was a pretty bad putter and now its one of the strongest parts of my game I rarely 3 put anymore. I practice on carpet in my house all the time and I think it really doesn't matter if your on real grass or not its all about the speed for me, if you put a target on the floor and practice getting the ball to it it helps a great deal with your putting. What I usually do is hit a ball in the middle of the room and try to hit puts to that ball. and it will help when you hit the practice green before a round to dial in your speed consistently, it did for me.. As for the green in your office I think it will be great for your game.. Good luck..

This. Get very good at your short putts - 3 to 6 feet. You'd be surprised how much that helps your putts beyond that - and how comforting it is to sit over a 5' putt knowing you've made 10 in a row many times before.

Exactly! I changed some stuff in my swing the other day and was hitting it terrible! I was in a greenside bunker 7 times and hit 3 greens in reg.... And still shot 73. IT'S THE DRILL!!! Do it!

    • Day 121: did a bit of mirror work with my driver. Working on shortening the backswing.
    • Day 305 - Grip and backswing work. Full swings were bothering the hip a bit.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-15 Light day. Lots of catch-up work. Checked the grip to make sure I wasn't compensating there, and did a little backswing work.
    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
