I am buying new clubs in the next few weeks. I haven't played golf regularly in 15 years but wish to start up again. Went to the driving range and discovered I can still hit my irons pretty well.Got a lesson also and plan to get some more. I would say i have a handicap of around 22.
I did some research and was interested in buying some game improvement clubs. The clubs I have are 15 yrs old.
From asking around/reviews online,I have narrowed my choice down to :

Mizuno Mx 100 irons (maybe 200???)
Nike Slingshot irons
Nike Ignite irons
TaylorMade Burner Plus irons
Callaway Big Bertha Irons
TaylorMade R7 CGB Max Irons
Nike Sumo irons
Cobra S9 irons

Should I knock any off the list?
Note sure about drivers, putters yet...suggestions welcome...

I have discovered now that there are super improvement golf clubs. I am confused as to which category i fall into, improvement or super improvement. As I said,I can still hit the ball pretty well,i'm a bit inconsistent but with practice and more lessons I'm thinking that i may not need the super improvement ones,or maybe i do...it's driving me mad....are improvement for handicaps under 20,and super improvement for over 20???
Are super improvement for total beginners?
Any help would be very welcome....

Zak.

Not a big fan of Callaways. A friend bought the Mizunos and really improved his iron play. He is around a 20 handicap. I recently switched from Ping i10's to a set of Ping Raptures. Club pro convinced me to try them and WOW what a difference. Cannot work the ball, but boy does it go straight.

I love my X-22's, and think they'd be perfect for you. Offer lots of forgiveness but still gives you room to improve.

Hows your ball flight on your clubs, and distance. Depending whether you want to take golf seriously or not, i recommend getting:

Burner Irons by Taylormade
MX200 Irons by Mizuno
X22 Irons by Callaway
G15 By Ping

If you have trouble with distance and such, these are semi hybrid sets

CGB MAX Irons by Taylormade
MX100 Irons by Mizuno
FT-iBrid by callaway
Rapture by Ping

Think about it

I have discovered now that there are super improvement golf clubs. I am confused as to which category i fall into, improvement or super improvement.

My feeling on SGI is that, except for the longest irons, SGI should be used for people who play 3-4 times

per year , beginners who aren't athletic, or people who have a super-slow swing speed and need the extra help. That having been said, at least two tournaments this year on the PGA Tour were won by a player who had two SGI irons (3,4) in his bag. Also, depending on your practice time available, and how well you already strike the ball, you might even consider Players' Irons. I started with them at around where you are. Not blades, or even muscle backs, but something like a Mizuno MP-52 or Ping i15.
Should I knock any off the list?

There is

exactly one criteria that matters on the putter, and that's finding one you love. Not the newest, not even in the last 3-4 years. The putter you used last time might well be great for you, if you like it. Now, there are a few things to narrow down the list of putters, based on your intended stroke, but that's another story for another time. Corey Pavin set the PGA Tour scoring record through 9 holes (26) three years ago with a putter that's been in his bag for quite some time. As for the driver, it isn't really necessary yet. Get back into the swing of things, and start attending demo days - you'll find one you love. Get it fit for you (most companies do this for free anyway) and you're off to a great love affair that will last a good 3-4 months before it's time for a new one
As I said,I can still hit the ball pretty well,i'm a bit inconsistent but with practice and more lessons I'm thinking that i may not need the super improvement ones,or maybe i do...it's driving me mad....are improvement for handicaps under 20,and super improvement for over 20???

If you're intending to practice and take lessons, I would say not to even consider the SGI unless you really can't get a GI into the air or a decent distance.

You may want to check the 2009 and maybe 2008 Golf Digest hot lists to see the irons categorized and reviewed. But nothing can - or should - substitute for hitting the clubs yourself, whether at a store, a range, or a demo day.

I recently purchased the TM Burner Plus, after testing most of the irons on your list. I am still getting used to the clubs, played one 9 hole round and was able to hit 2 greens in regulation, and made my first par 4 (an accomplishment for me at least).

I am going to take a couple of lessons then have the clubs final fit

My recommendation is to hit as many balls as you can a couple at a time with each club. I narrowed it down to the Mizuno MX100 and Burner Plus, the Plus just inched out the MX100s.

yeah,i'm going to take more lessons and practice a bit more before i take the plunge and buy new clubs...i'll give those burners a try though...and the mizunos...

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
