Okay, one of my goals for this summer was to finally break 80. I have shot 80 or 81 several times.

Yesterday, I went out golfing and things started real good with a birdie on the first hole. The front nine, I played pretty good. I had 3 birdies and 2 bogeys with a ball in the water on 9 which I still saved for par. So I shot a 35 (-1) on the way out. I was pretty sure I was going to break 80.

So then skip to the 18th hole. I was even on the back. I did a good job not getting to ahead of myself. When I would start getting to excited I would take a drink and settle down. The 18th hole is a 459 yard dogleg left with a pond on the right and out-of-bounds left. (my misses that day were left, usually I slice). I felt like Phil, My 3-wood isn't long enough to get to the dogleg. I hit a drive but was afraid to go left so I blocked right. I ended up next to a fairway bunker in this unlevel (uphill and slanted) lie with a bumb infront of the ball. I had tree troubles and tried a miracle low cut 3 iron from 200 yards that went up into the trees and left me a 150 yards but I was under some trees. I hit it on the fringe from there. I basically three putted from the fringe to get double.

I was ticked I had a chance to break par or atleast shot par and blew it. Hey I shot a 73 that is definitely below 80.

You aren't an idiot. You just had the absolute perfect round. If you had gotten par on the 18th is would have been too perfect. Hell, I would quit golf if I ever broke par, what else would there be for me to do? This way you have that little imperfection which will keep you coming back.

Wasn't there an episode of Frasier where Niles and Frasier find that a perfect evening must have some imperfection so that you have something to complain about?

Congrats on a great round.

Holy crap!

From not having broke 80 to a 73? That's outstanding......congratulations!

I know exactly how you feel about the 18th, but I'll offer that it doesn't matter what you shoot, you'll always look back at the shots you left out on the course. You can't help doing it, but you just can't dwell on it.

Again, congrats on a great round.

I just went out for a smoke and realized i didn't say congrats. Your round confirms a suspicion i've had for a while. When you start pulling your game together it is quite possible to drop strokes in bunches. I know I have it in me to play great golf but have only broken into the 80's once (87). I have a feeling I will do it again this weekend but feel it will quite possibly be low 80's. I have been practicing everyday for a few hours and am feeling unusually confident. I have worked out a few glitches and am stroking it well. If I use sound course management I think I may have finally made the turn. Congrats again.

congrats on the great score and thanks for making me laugh... and hey... we all do it.

my first foray with par was this year, but I idioted a putt on 17 and made a great birdie on 18 to get my first even par round... closest I had ever been before was +4. Anyway... make this something to build on and start consistently breaking 80... next thing you know you'll have all kind of opportunities to screw up late in the round and miss par.
