Problem I have is anyone who cheats so blatantly in front of you is basically calling you a moron. I am of the type that does not believe in ratting and would rather someone else report the gentleman. If I had only thrown down 20 bucks I probably would let it go. If I had put big money it would be different, really depends on the circumstance.

I'll deal with it face-to-face. Tell the guy I know he cheated and that it's the last time we play together.

I didn't misread it. They were playing some sort of an outing/tournament with "nice sponsor prizes".

No-cheating with

anything more than your own conscience on the line is childish and disgusting. Letting somebody cheat because you're afraid of being seen as a "tattle-tale" is cowardly.

To me that is the point, you have to be consistent. Should it be O.K. to cheat in a friendly poker game with your buddies where the most you will lose is $20? To me that is worse than counting cards while playing blackjack in Vegas.

I've never played with anyone that 'blatantly' cheated. Meaning, somone kicks out a ball when you're standing next to them or has done something so egregious in full view that its obvious. Guys go digging in the brush and always find their ball? Once or twice, ok. If it happens 6 or 7 times - pretty obvious something is up. But I'm not really paying attention to what ball others are playing and I'm not going to ask to see it so they can prove it. And I've never played for "big money". Maybe once or twice a year I'll play with buddies for $5 a hole, $5 birdies etc. And I've never came across my friends trying to cheat. My approach is to be direct with them and leave others out of it. If you're in an outing with 100 other guys - who the hell knows what goes on in other groups.

I agree on the blackjack point, I am just talking about what it would take to personally get me involved. As I said I would hope he was reported however.

Sorry, I'll do it face-to-face and leave everyone else out of it. I don't want to have a reputation as being a crybaby - which is what it looks like if you lose by 2 shots and claim the other guy cheated without having video of the guy cheating.

I'm not getting involved if it is an outing with some door prizes at stake. If it was a one-on-one match play with others watching...someone will see if someone cheats. If it's just the two players on the course - I'll let the guy know that's the last time we play together and I won't pay the bet. And I'm not going to blab about that to the membership if it was a one-on-one match.

Actually, you're wrong, again. It's obvious you chose not to read the OPs post. Not only did he realize his playing partner was cheating but so did another player. I don't know where you play golf but if I were in a tournament and some douchebag was cheating, like these circumstances, where it was obvious and someone called him out and reported it, I would be thrilled. You paid good money to play in a tournament, the prizes come from that money and belong to those that rightfully deserve it. Other players would be happy to know that a cheater was outed. It would prevent others from trying the same (we hope) or at the very least that player would never be invited back to that tournament. (and hopefully, none in the area) Lastly, I'm willing to be a lot of tournament golfers would pat you on the back or buy you a drink for doing the right thing. I, along with a lot of guys, would be pissed that you knowingly let someone cheat and win prizes.

Your not leaving everyone else out of it . Your letting them get screwed because your worried about be called a crybaby. Thats the whole point you fail to get.

What's the % of cheaters in a 100 person outing? 10%? 15%?

I'll pick my spots and handle it the way I want to handle it.

Like i said before, we have a small active memberbase, and people know each other - and if something like this happens, word spreads, and you will have a though time getting socialising going in the future.
So it wasnt an easy decision for me, and i really hate these situations - but i played in a lot of these tournaments since i started playing golf, and that was the first time i was really disgusted about someone, how he disrespected the game and the members in our club.
So i didnt see any other choice - than to not sign his scorecard (which equals reporting him).

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
